I ran into a tree really hard in my last subaru, but the damned spark plugs stayed put. So 'no' is the answer.

Prolly 3/8's or 1/4 inch will be fine

the easy way is to jack each side of the motor so you can get better access past the frame rails to sneak in with a spark plug socket on a short extension. sometimes it requires to remove the engine mount nut on the bottom side of the cross member to jack the engine high enough.

God I love these cars.....where "easy" spark plug removal requires unbolting an engine mount and jacking the engine up from the frame  :2funny:

I haven't done mine in a while, but I don't remember there being anything in the way after removing the air box, battery and washer fluid tank.  Still, a pain in the as for just plugs, but it doesn't take all that long to take those out

I didn't have a problem taking out the plugs in 2.0's or SOHC/DOHC 2.5's without jacking anything up.  You're all a bunch of pussies.

Unbolt and swing the washer tank and intake tube out of the way, depending on how much room you want/need.  Get your socket and a short 3/8 extension onto the plug first.  Then drop the ratchet down there and snap onto the extension and break the plug free.  You'll be able to detach the ratchet from the extension and spin the plug out by hand with your finger on the extension.  Repeat for all four.  Installation is reverse of removal.  I prefer to put a very small dab of high temp antiseize on the threads before installation.  Spin plug until it seats, with your fingers first.  Then torque to proper angle as specified by plug manufacturer.  While you've got the coils off, it might be a good idea to inspect the plug boot for corrosion and wirebrush it + apply a light dab of dielectric grease if necessary.

I've tried using a flex extension before but that just twists enough to piss you off and not go anywhere.  After working on midengine cars for years, subarus are a laughable piece of cake.

Example 1: see his signature.  Toyotas suck, it took me 40 minutes and a pint of blood to change the DS headlight bulb.

That is because it may take a mechanic to maintain a subaru, but it takes a warrior to work on a Toyota.

Powerplant is fixed.  I'm sourcing a new garage to begin on the bodywork and install the rest of the engine bay upgrades. ;)
