Replacement Headlight Bulbs
« on: January 26, 2010, 07:28:04 PM »
I am looking to replace my stock headlight bulbs.  Big thing is I dont have the cash to dump into doing an HID conversion or anything like that right now.  I really just want something that will light up the road especially when it is wet out.  The stock bulbs that came with my car are fine on a clear night but when the roads are wet or its foggy out I cant see anything.  I have used a few different types of bulbs in previous cars silverstar ultras which were not bad, and a few ridiculous blue headlamps which left me blind and nearly killed me on several rainy/snowy night situations.  If none of them are all that good then I will just deal with the stock lights till I can afford to do hid swap

I had the same problem with my lights when I first bought my car.  I tried the Silverstars and they died within a few months.  It was a complete waste of money.  I would try another brand of headlight bulb.  After my Silverstars quit I got mad and went with Napa brand bulbs H7's I believe.  I have been running them for almost 3 years with no problems and are plenty bright.  I would also suggest yellow fogs.  For some reason they seem to work better in foggy conditions, plue you get that whole JDM look  I ordered a set of PAAA's Crystal..Ultimate....something's(suggested brand off of legacygt.com) and they are great. HIDs are great too, and not terribly expensive.

Hope this helps

yeah, I loved my PIAA Crystal Ion fogs...they're great.

as for headlights, I've done the silvertars, great for a couple weeks, then dimmer, then dead in a few months.  I picked up a set of used PIAA bulbs once just to try them out (they're crazy expensive, didn't wanna waste the money if they sucked) and the used set of PIAA's was better than the Silverstars and lasted until an accident blew one of the bulbs

cool so the piaas are not bad how did you manage to come across used bulbs that some bone head didn't put his grimy fingers all over and toss back in the package did you know the person.  It seems like from what i read i am better off going with clear bulbs rather then colored bulbs.  The colored ones always look brighter when you stare at them but dont light the road that well.  That also could be because Ive never bought anything nicer then the Silverstar ultras

Yes the color on the bulb is a film which cuts the light output quite a bit so do not by bulbs with a blue color film on them. Just by good quality halogens that come within 75% of hids, much better then stock bulbs.

i got lucky. took a chance with someone on nasioc who had upgraded to an hid retrofit, if i remember right.  bulbs were clean and put back in the original packaging at like a quarter the regular price  8-)

I've had Narva +50 lows and HIR highs in both my Subarus for over 2 years and have only lost one lowbeam bulb so far.

start here:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=954736

then:
http://hirheadlights.com/

and:
http://shnu.us/HIR%20Trimming%20Stock.htm

almost there:
http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProducts/AutomotiveLighting/LampReplacementGuide/

and done:
http://store.candlepower.com/

FOR FOG, you should try the select yellows on the candlepower website <--- less fruity and more focused than the PIAA Crystal Ion yellows (had those on my wagon)

i always hear good things about that candlepower site....but the only thing they list for 9007 bulbs is Phillips Xtreme Power.  I haven't heard anything about those...

I like what i hear about all the headlights on there.  So far I like what ive heard about the osram silverstars, the navra +50s the best, the ge nighthawks and phillips extreme powers dont sound bad either.  I was just about to purchase the osram silverstars yesterday when i realized that only one came in a package on almost every site ive seen them on.

I just buy the new line of silverstars, if one blows I just buy another one, swap it out, then return it as defective like a week later :)

I agree I took them out just before it got dark out it was hard for me to wait.  They are a great improvement i have to say thanks for giving me a few of those links.  Specifically the one to nasioc which pointed me to this website:
http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/tech.html

I was about to fall back into the pitfall of buying shitty blue bulbs again and having to deal with not being able to see in the snow and rain.  At one point i also considered HID which I also read on there for the most part cant be done the cheap way of just replacing harness'  and ballasts.  Now what is on there may or may not all be true but the way it is explained makes sense.

I couldnt be happier with the bulbs i bought and would highly recommend checking them out on ebay the seller had them to me in 2 days.   http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/US-DISTRIBUTOR-Original-OSRAM-Silverstar-H7_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem56311ff94eQQitemZ370191366478QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
Link to the ones I bought

that's a helluva difference there!  I'm gonna have to see what they've got for other bulb types

edit: Ugh, why do none of the really good bulbs come in 9004 or 9007's?!?  (rhetorical, I read why, just annoyed by it)

Yeah, that's my plan for my bugeye
but my gf's jetta takes 9004's, and they don't make the Xtreme's in that size.  but at bulbs.com I can get the Xtremes for mine and the VisionPlus for hers for like $50 total plus shipping....sounds like a good price to me for 2 sets of bulbs
