Detailed the outside of STI
« on: December 01, 2009, 08:55:20 PM »
Ive had my car for ~4 months now and decided it was time to give the paint some attention.   It was in pretty good nick but you could see the some swirls when you got up close.  The previous owner worked for a body shop and used the Mr clean system to wash the car.  Seems to work pretty well as you use deionized water to rinse the car so no rubbing the paint to dry it and therefore less swirls 8-)

Got all the stuff from walmart

After washing, I hand applied Meguiars swirl X (8$) in small sections and removed with microfiber towels.  I used Meguiars Scratch 2.0 for any ones that the swirl X didnt get.

The applied Meguiars Tech wax (17$) with the orbital buffer and buffed off with more microfiber towels. Decided to debadge the trunk while I was at it.  Whole process took maybe 10 hours.  Pics arent great quality as my camera is crap.  And I know I should have taken pics of the before, but it was dark when I started (I was rather tipsy :-D).

Here is one of the car when clean but not polished and is bad light

NICE JOB!!  I concur with your process, but you should of used some polish before the wax to bring out the color alittle more..

#1 you dont use swirlX or any carnuba based/swirl remover for that matter, if you didnt even compound or DA the car to begin with...

#2 what took you 10 hours?

I can see it lasting 10 hrs by hand for the majority of work then using  a DA for the final wax..... I've spent 18hrs detailing cars but I normally try to get them done in about 6-8 for full corrections but its really dependent on the car.

I wouldnt necessarily do the entire car in a heavy cut like Megs Scratch X Id save that for more severe stuff but to each their own, we also dont know the OP's experience with detailing (which he never made any claims he just said he detailed his own car and was happy with the results).

Regardless---- NICE FINISH OP ! (just be cautious working like that Id hate to see you wear your paint thickness so soon )

Thank you    I did the car with swirl X and only the scratches with scratch X.  As to the previous poster  :-oSure I could have went to one of the detailing websites and spent 200 bucks on green pads/ orange pads, fancy optically pure products and then gone through all the steps, but as to viletsti or whatever heres the thing.

1. The paint wasnt too bad on the car really as the last guy who had it.
2. I really dont care that much.  The car looks nice and although it took me ~10 hrs to do it, it was bit by bit.

I'll be sure to for him over on nasioc lol :uglystupid2:
