4eat to 5mt
« on: February 03, 2010, 08:28:11 PM »
Say i were to buy a 1st gen legacy or impreza.  How feasible is it to get a manual into the car if it's an auto?  Assuming a Junkyard trans, driveshaft, and axles.

there is the issue of no hole in the firewall for a clutch pedal and i think there is an association with the ecu...ive asked this question before and i ALWAYS get the answer that your better off dumping the time and money into another car that is already a manual BUT it is definitely possible.

The ingredients are, as far as I know:
-Manual ECU
-Manual Trans, shift linkage, etc
-Manual Trans Driveshaft
-LSD rear may or may not be reusable.
-some trick wiring for the reverse lights and neutral switch
-Pedal Box
-New Clutch and service kit (hey it's apart)
-Master Cyl.

I was eyeballing the 4eat Legacy SS in the for sale section here...but the money required for the conversion to a 5mt makes that prohibitive.  And I'm not gonna drive 2 automatic cars.  I suppose maybe i'll toss some greenbacks at the bmw to improve an already good experience.

Yup... been there done that... drill a hole in the firewall.. mount 3rd pedal... mount up the tranny...swap the drive shaft... swap a few wires around and its good to go. I should have done a sr20 swap instead.... that might have motivated me to keep my 240sx

Alas, no.  I like the BMW a bit too much I think, and Al sort of nixed the idea too.  The BMW is just a few tiny things away from being a great DD, not an entire driveline swap.

The BMW is the most cost effective option to a fun weekend car and polite daily driver.  It's damn near 100% bone stock and for a car with that much mileage, is reliable as hell.  You know what's wrong with it, versus the unknown entity that is someone else's project.
