Bleeding Power steering
« on: April 01, 2010, 07:18:44 AM »
Hey guys, I just installed a PS pump in my 05 92x to replace my leaking one.  After the install she drove wonderfully and the following day i installed a new belt.  After this it still drove perfect! but, whoops! forgot to bleed the system.  So i put her up on jacks and did the lock to lock with the wheels about 20 times and called it good.

now, when i'm making left turns my steering wheel stutters a little like there is air in the system, maybe?   :?

anyone have any ideas about this?

Stupid question: Fluid level is still good, right?
Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

Assuming nothing got screwed up, kinked or blocked, yes you'd still have air in the system.

Either that or you've got a problem with the rack binding, which no pump alone will solve.  Knowing subaru's issue with P/S leaks and other problems, i'd vote on a rebleed, followed by a long session at church on your knees, begging forgiveness for buying a subie in the first place.

If that doesn't fix it, jack the front of the car up, have someone crank the wheel and get under it and listen to see if the rack is making any odd popping sound or the steering shaft is binding.

yeah fluid level is good.  infact i drained a little so its between f and l on the cold marking just to be sure.. that seemed to help a little.  i'll report back tomorrow.

There are a couple of write ups on Nasioc about replacing the clamps for the power steering system.  They are strong enough to prevent fluid leaks, but weak enough that air can be sucked into the system.  I replaced all 6 of mine with worm gear clamps (hose clamps) and then performed the bleeding procedure again.  It sounds stupid, I know.  Grab ahold of the rubber line that sticks onto the p/s pump and wiggle it, you could probably pull it off without too much pressure.  The rubber lines on the reservoir are the same.  If you were shoving your fat American hands down there changing the belt you probably wiggled the hoses in the process, which could have introduced air into the system.

hrmm.. could be.

its actually running nicely now.  after it sat overnight a few days the problem seems to have gone away slowly.  I'll check out what they say to do on the NASIOC.

thanks.
