What car to buy?
« on: February 15, 2010, 10:30:02 PM »
I had an 06 WRX and now I have an 08 Tundra I am selling as I no longer need a truck.  I am currently looking at 2 cars...

I loved my WRX but I cant say i am a huge fan of the Hatch or else I would buy an STI without a doubt.  With that said I'm looking at a 2010 legacy 2.5 GT(the fact they stopped making the Spec B pisses me off too) and an EVO X GSR. I could get a loaded GT(Hate the wood trim interior though) for less than a GSR. I have yet to drive either.

What do you guys think?

Do you want a fast car that says "hey, look at me"?
Or do you want a nice cruiser with some balls that a cop wont look twice at?

Legacy:  The 2010's are great inside, and the 6mt is nice.  The body begs for a nice wheel/tire package to fill out the slightly blistered fenders.  It is, however, a big car.

Evo X: The DCT is still 'untested'.  Also, parking lot tomfoolery rapid-input maneuvers like an ebrake turn, downshift to first, and accellerating through...really confuse the software, the car just stops, then the power returns.  Interior is also spartan at best, and I found the Recaros uncomfortable.  Possibly because I'm a typical fat American?  The 5-speed manual (non GSR) is bulletproof and a carryover from the last evo.  The 4b11 engine is also amazing.  Stock-for-stock, probably 'better' performance than anything Subaru has, but no folding seats and a pretty small trunk hurt practicality.  Also had some recall issues because the gas pedal arms (plastic) were snapping off.

In conclusion: if you're young and don't have a GF, or a lot of friends, get the evo.  If you do stuff and/or have a GF and lotsa friends, get the Legacy.

Whats wrong with your current WRX?  Do you need more cabin room?  I'd keep your WRX, especially in this economic climate.  Or do you need a 2nd car so both yourself and your wife have one?

I wouldn't drive a new Leggy if you paid me.

Dave, you've mixed-up the GSR and MR models -- the GSR is 5MT, the MR has the TC-SST.

Evo X GSR FTW.

Ah, thanks!  I forgot, since the RS used to be a 5mt, the GSR had the 6mt, and the MR had a 6mt and some other crap.  Anyway, the 5mt evo would probably be better for fun.  A shame the 2.0 engine gets such shitty mileage.

I don't really care about the MPG since my truck gets about 10 LOL.  Also I don't want the MR because I'm not into the whole paddle shifter thing.

Sorry, I missed the piece about you not having the WRX anymore.  I'm partial to the newer hatches myself, but in your case I'd take the EVO over the new Legacy any day.  I'm in the minority in that I think Subaru did a terrible job with the Legacy redesign.  I REALLY preferred the old one myself.  Obviously, when looking at performance, the two are in completely different ball parks, so if you don't like hatches the real question is which EVO model do you want

I"d vote for the Evo, but it all boils down to which one you feel more comfortable driving.  The Evo X is more refined and mature than previous gens, but it's still ultimately a weapon more than anything.  I strongly disagree with Dave on the interior.  I think it's just as nice as any modern offering out there today and there are some fixes and other small tweaks available to address early design issues such as the gas pedal and a faulty fuel pump relay. I've sat in the Evo's recaros and the 08+ Sti's recaros and I couldn't tell a bit of difference.  Both held me like a visegrip.  www.evolutionm.net has boatloads of information on tweaking them.  Tunability is excellent and the engine is in a completely different class than anything subaru has yet to offer.   You will not see 28psi and 8,000rpm raised redlines on stock EJ255 or 257 bottom ends.  There are Evo track cars running stock bottom ends for two seasons running ridiculous power levels that have yet to die and justify a rebuild.
Ultimately they're of different classes and specialties.  The legacy has more room and an adequately aggressive yet responsible drivetrain.  This particular Evo is much better at being a streetable racecar than previous gens, but is still a track weapon with a razor's edge.  It's performance first, comfort second.  Commuting may be okay, but if you spend a LOT of time in the car, I'd advise against it if comfort matters.   You buy an evo to slay subarus, not to take it to the mall.

salesman at the mitsubishi dealership said its gotta be above 40 to drive EVO due to tires...And they only have 1 at Mangino and Denooyer is now closed.

Probably going to test drive a 2.5 GT and WRX this weekend or early next week.  Rather have the STI performance than the WRX but man I can't get used to that Honda Civic SI look of the Hatch  :x wish a sedan STI was available!!!!!!
