I wouldnt dare ask this over on NASTY-OIC, but you guys are bored and like to show off so lemme get your opinions idiot2

04 sti with borla header, highflow cat, avo BPV and panel filter and reflash (not protuned).  Seems to boost to 16 psi at peak. Can I go to the shop, get an MBC and protune and happily hit 18-20 psi.  Questions.

Does the stock turbo run of air this boost level or any other problems with this psi, WG, injectors, fuel pump etc with stock intercooler. If this wont work...

Can I just go for an 18 or 20g with a fuel pump, injectors and tune to keep the engine bay looking stock (not that a 20g will look stock under there).

I guess the idea Im after is...

Stock looking engine bay with minimal mods, dont want FMIC etc, hard pulling with not too high psi and hence less risk of engine poppy.  Dont want accessport or any other of that stuff, happy to get a protune, once or twice a year and use as my DD so no CELs. Goal ~330whp, not looking to increase ever.

I tried to call the shop today but i think I was too late and they were closed. Anyone else got a similar set up?

The Shop CT has a high-reading dyno; not saying that's good/bad, but take that for what it's worth. VF39 setups make 320-330whp on their dyno.

Whatever you do, make sure you get the 8cm^2 exhaust housing. I wouldn't bother with an 18G - too low of a turbo upgrade for the $$. Blouch TD05H-20G+EWG and the typical supporting mods would be real nice.

The set 20 g you mentioned was the one I was looking at with inj and a fuel pump. Obv gonna loose some power and spool with out fmic, catless etc, but I'm not after max power. There us at least one place that will take suby dollars towards a blouch too;-). I wonder if I could get it set up as dd without cels and maintain reasonable reliability only getting on it now and again. I don't launch ever. You guys ever hear of this set up?I know it's not that common as everyone seems to do all the other mods too to help get extra hp, or has done fmic etc b4 gettin a bigger turbo.

i've been researching doing a 20g for my 06wrx and everyone says the td05 is not worth it, the td06 much better.
a couple tuners, i think Clark Turner or whatever his name is says that it is his favorite turbo for the stock block 2.5

As long as he goes with Blouch, they use the TD06 compressor (unlike cheaper TD05H-20Gs). The TD05H hotside will increase spool, which for a DD fun car with max power / top-end not being the main priority, this is ideal. If you start thinking you want some more top-end, the EWG I mentioned will completely negate the "restriction" of the TD05H hotside, and will outperform an IWG'd TD06H-20G.

i agree with what you are saying but after talking to him this past weekend, i don't think he will ever go EWG.  and the feeling of the car being choked up on top end will make him want more.

Sadly to say that to do ~330whp safely and expect it to last with minimal mods is... pushing it. Know the saying Fast, reliable, cheap. Pick Two? Yeah...  sad

If you want better boost control, go with an electronic boost control solenoid, Cosworth America was selling the Prodrive EBCS for ~98 on ebay a little while ago. Manual will only get you so far and the EBCS provides better boost modulation. And if your upgrading the turbo you will most likely want a better intake. That'll rather kill the "stock" look of the engine bay, but a Cobb or SPT will do the trick without looking completely obnoxious. Also, if you want a bigger turbo, have you looked at the new(ish) DOM 2.5TXR? Its a great little turbo that makes a decent amount of power. Fuel Pump and injectors are a must, since the stock ones can get maxed out pretty quick.

The front mount will actually make the car spool slower than a top mount since theres more air to compress in the system.

Since your willing to go over to CT and concerned about blowing the motor, check out EFI Logics. They have a Mustang Dyno(typically a low reading dyno) but all of the guys over there are top notch and Chris tunes these motors to last for a good long while. They do Opensource tuning as well as AP. They did my entire motor job and I'd reccomend them to everyone with a Subaru.  afro

More than I needed to, since I went over the top with everything and I couldn't use any of the old engine so I had to buy everything new as well. But now I have a care free 350 wheel car. As soon as I replace my old intake with an APS 70mm CAI Chris is gonna raise the redline since the powerband is still climbing at 6500.

Negligible difference in spool on a 2.5L & upgraded turbo.

And for boost control, NOTHING beats a MBC with speed density (MAP). afro
