Some CEL Issues and a request
« on: March 01, 2010, 08:42:07 AM »
So I've had a CEL for a while, PCV System Malfunction. Replaced the PCV valve, everything was good for ~30 miles and now I have

P0400 EGR System
P0031 Heater Control Circuit Low
P0131 O2 Sensor Malfunction

So, it sounds like I've got a bad O2 sensor (Bank 1, Sensor 1) and some clogged vacuum lines. All just in time for my inspection to be due

Anyone have a good O2 sensor for an NA Subaru laying around or know of a cheaper alternative to the ~$100 part from the parts store? Do the universal fits work as well? (They're half the price).

Thanks

Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

I have these exact same questions!  I almost replaced the O2 sensor on the Forester this weekend.  How is your car running?  Any hesitation, lurching, or bucking; when my car acts up it is almost impossible to drive.

Car hesitates under load below 2000 rpm but otherwise runs pretty well. Its a stick so easy for me to work around drivability issues but even so its not bad. I get around 23mpg around town. Guess I just need to reset the codes before inspection and hope the ny readiness check on the meter is right.

Ha, lemme guess you have to slip the clutch and keep the RPM's up a bit more than usual when taking off from a stop and driving below 2000 rpms is impossible most of the time.

Sounds like our plan of attack is the same...reset the ECU and pray.

Pretty much. I blamed the 100k old plugs an wires but maybe this is the reason. Don't really want to dump 100 into it since it still runs and drives well enough. The cruise control not working is far more annoying and possibly related.

I'm starting with the O2 sensor and fuel filter this weekend.  Then plugs and wires...followed by what ever else comes up... I have an evap code that I haven't been able to track down as well.

I'm pretty sure the the direct fit O2 sensor will work fine, the front is a WBO2 sensor so Bosch the replacement is pretty standard...at least that is what I have talked myself into believing.

I cleaned and reset all the terminals an spent the morning driving around. Only code that came back was egr which is probably vacuum lines that new replacing as they clog wig carbon deposits. Good luck wih yours.  Getting my inspection now after resetting codes. It'll probably fail but worth a shot.

As I expected, it failed for being not ready, which means I now have a 10 day inspection (which, since my old sticker was out of date, is more legal than before), so I'm going to spend the rest of the day trying to find an EGR diagram of my car so I can figure out what lengths of what hoses I need to replace.

This filter on my car

Was passing little to no air, and only gurgled when you tried to blow through it. Car runs better now that I've bypassed it but I suppose it probably should be there.

CEL is back on. Car still stumbles less but same P0400. Fred has some parts waiting for me that may help solve the issue.
