How hard is it to swap parts from one car to another
« on: March 04, 2010, 08:35:18 PM »
Hey I have been looking at getting rust fixed on my car and was thinking it might be cheaper to just get a new shell. I am wondering how hard it would be to swap my whole interior, suspension and whole drivetrain into another super super clean impreza shell? So yeah just wondering what you guys think how hard it would be, how long do you think it could take.
Thanks,
Peter

i highly doubt you will be able to find a perfect shell, do the work or pay someone to do the work all for less than what it would cost to get the rust fixed. just my .02

also when i first read the thread title...i was definitely thinking something else :2funny:

Already found an excellent shell just dealing with the guy atm. And it is around the same price to only get 1 quarter panel fixed while the shell has no rust on quarters or any on the body. Also fixed the thread title.  :2funny:  :2funny:   :buck2:

Yeah I know not one day but was wondering if you think it could be done in under a week or so. But yeah hopefully I can grab the shell it is perfect looking.

well thats good on the shell find...it wont be easy to do the swap without a garage but its definitely possible. idk about a week unless your working on it non stop and run into no problems. i would definitely get in touch with fred tho :-P

24 hours that's a LOL maybe if your a race car team  swapping shells will take awhile. Me and 2 of my friends are swapping a 240 and it's been awhile. But this swap is down to every single part basically

Not worth it IMO

it is not hard but very very time consuming. you have to think of all the little stuff. does this new shell have glass, does it include weather strips and seals. I sold my old GC shell to a rally guy. he was unemployed and it took him 2 weeks working 8 hour days by himself to transfer all the parts from one car to the new shell.

are the shells the same? both cars have the same number of doors?

Most importantly, will you want to paint your new shell before installing everything?  There will NEVER be an easier time to make it the color you want.

And yes stripping and swapping shells is a bitch.  You'll discover this when you remove the dash and attempt to disassemble the hvac system.

Also risking causing shorts, missing grounds, missing fuses, and generally causing chaos.
Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

No painting 4dr gc with. Its a 95 so no worry about inspection. All glass and strips is their. Just would be transfering my suspension, drivetrain and interior. Got a garage to use also if I plan to go this route.

Then it seems you've answered your question fairly well.  Post pics!
