RROD xbox 360?

So, I am looking for an Xbox 360 or PS3.  They are expensive. 

I have seen a few Red ring of death Xbox's on craigslist going for $30.  I have read the "How To" on repairing the RROD permanently, seems easy.  Is there a way to check first and make sure that the system is repairable?   I mean, if the previous owner did the "towel trick" or put it in the freezer, they could have ruined the system right?  Do I just need to shell out the cash for a brand new system? 

I am kind of partial to the PS3 because it has built in WIFI and Blue Ray player, but everyone I talk to says XBOX is better.  Really?

Here is the problem.  I am on Xbox 360 number 3.  1st one died and I had a friend show me how to fix it worked for about a week and then died again tried the fix again this time it was broken for good.  2nd one lasted for about a year then for no apparent reason in the middle of playing Madden 2010 started getting green lines then froze only for me to turn it off then back on again and find the three red rings no video.  So I did my homework and found that the RROD is commonly caused by the xclamps that clamp the heat sinks to gpu and cpu.  These stupid clamps dont disperse the heat properly and overheat the two chips and also can in both of my cases screw up the memory chips on the board.  Did the xclamp fix reflowed the board.  And cross fingers and still rrod.  Had a friend do the heat gun trick and it did not work.  Number 3 is a system a friend bought recertified but got banned for modding but i have had no trouble with it and dont play online so I could care less.  If im not mistaken it was like 75-100 bucks.  In short I wouldnt recommend buying one that is broken, i consider myself a moderate tech geek and ive been unsucessful with the last two for fixing them.  Either buy new or recertified and if you have an old one with the hard drive just keep the hard drive thats what ive done.

2 years of trouble free ps3'n for me!  I love it...and the blu ray feature makes it worth it 100% in my book!

Yeah, but ps3 has the ylod...same as rrod.  Not playing fanboy as I own both and Im a pc gamer, but saying, sony has their issue to. Friend just sent in is slim for repair
It is a shot in the dark to keep it (repaired xbox) working for a while.  I have a friend that now has 4 xboxs in his house that he has done the xclamp on and all have been fine for about 6+ months.  His luck may run out and they will probably rrod again though.

All in all, I would probably save to get a new one which will come with the warranty.  I would say what xbox has over ps3 is live.  Since MS had more time to develop it, its so much better than psn.  Yes, it cost $.  I buy $30 year cards when buy.com has them on sale.  Gaming with friends online is simple and when your gaming, you can still talk with friends with may be in other games, unlike psn.

I'm on my 3rd XBOX360 as well (first RROD fixed under warranty, second wasn't), but it's worth it.

I have a friend who's repaired 3 RROD XBox's and they're still working 6mo later. Thats a $36 XBox360.

That being said, he's bought a few that were non repairable.

I've had 1 xbox for I guess a little less then a year now?  bought used off peter here, he had an intercooler on it and that's worked to keep it from ever even getting warm.

I think for $30 it's worth trying to fix.  I believe there's a way you can test it by turning it on and watching the lights flash a code, that will tell you if it's just the overheating problem or something else.


that said, I do have both the xbox and the ps3.  PS3 is used mostly for a blu-ray player now, with the occasional game if I find a better deal on the ps3 version than the xbox versoin, and if I don;t care about playing it online.  I do like the XboxLive very much, other than I think it's retarded to have to pay for just accessing it, when they easily make their money back on downloadable content anyway....but that's another discussion

I have a ps3 and love it the PSN is everything i want can party up with friends no$ per month. Ive always been a sony fan still have me og ps and ps2. Plus if you have hi def the blu ray is the tittys

Well, be careful cause sony is working on a payment plan for PSN..though will still have a free segment, which online gaming better be a part of.

The ps3 is about the best bluray player out and more "future proof" than stand alones and has become a good movie streamer (thanks PS3team), and then for my games like Heavy Rain and soon God of War. (play the GoW3 demo. Sweet shit)

Oh, and netflix is currently intergrated better on xbox, if you use it.  PS3 seems slower and you need to insert a netflix dvd first.  I want to get a RROD xbox to fix so i can have a netflix streamer in the bedroom.

I guess I'm lucky. My Xbox360 has been working perfectly fine since I got it.

Then again, my 1985 NES still works too. Maybe it's just me, I'm awesome.

I still have mine, though took apart to add a new connector/cart slot.
bought with b-day money when i was what, 10.  Ah, such a happy day going into toys-r-us that day with my mom.  First game i bought was skykid.

SNES is also fantastic...i no longer have one but did for MANY years. just beat the original 1991 SNES mario on the Wii a couple weeks ago. fantastic

I've been fixing RRoD and other 360 issues for a few years now (disc drives, paint jobs etc). It's pretty straight forward if you've got any sort of tech background. Feel free to ask my any questions, I also do the jobs for 10 dollars plus parts, which for the RRoD is about two or three dollars in screws.

I've been seriously thinking about a black paintjob for mine, it's the only white piece on my whole entertainment setup, everything else is black, silver and glass.  sticks out like a friggen sore thumb
