considering something drastically different
« on: March 16, 2010, 12:47:05 PM »
So, the reason for even considering this, I've probably mentioned before, I have a crack in the center of my front bumper that needs repairing and a couple spots on the roof where the previous owner scraped through the paint to bare metal with stuff on the roof rack.
I'm toying with the idea of saving the money and painting these bits myself (no, I don't care if it's show quality, as long as it looks good from a foot or two away).  The problem with this is there's no way in hell I'm matching a 7 year fade on a sonic yellow paint

So, here's the result of being bored at work, finding some wagon photos on google and loading them into an online photo editor to play with schemes to cover the effected areas and tie it all together.

I'm on the fence about dong the trunk, but if I don't it looked kinda dumb having a black wing above the yellow trunk.  And as for blacking out the center bottom section of the bumper...I'm not trying to look like an Evo, I swear  :crazy2:

thought? opinions? alternative suggestions?
I don't know if i'll ever make the effort to see this through, but it was fun to play with the pics if nothing else  :-)

Have you considered that dry carbon wrap?  It comes out looking pretty sick

i thought about it, but it's expensive as hell, and I'm not THAT much into looks.  Even this would be by far pretty damn extreme for me  :-D

plus, I don't know how I would get the wrap to sit flat and not leave a lip around the edges on the hood section where it won't be going to any edges

my main reason for even touching the hood section is that even when the paint was dull, the yellow scoop blinded me when the sun hit it right.  when it's waxed, forget it  :-(

But, I hate when just the scoop is a different color, I'm not a huge fan of an all black hood either.  The other option I was toying with was this:

but that seems a bit much too I think

hooked: if you meant the 3M fake carbon stuff (drycarbonwrap.com) it's not as expensive as I thought, but I'm thinking I don't really dig it.  I wonder if a plain black vinyl might be the best way to try and see if I like it first, rather than the carbon one though.  is it possible to do a smooth wrap over something like a hood scoop?

its too bad the hood lines couldn't match up to where the lower bumber is black, that would be cool

How about a getting a black lip and then just black out center section of the bottom bumper with the crack repair. Are your side skirts still black?

oh, forgot to mention, I have the black lip from JNA waiting to go on.  yes the side skirts are still black, and I'd like to find some sort of black rear lip/spats/something to tie the lower trim together

they told me they won't fit flush on the wagon bumper.  it's sedan specific and they don't carry a wagon set

and not a done deal yet lol  something still has to be done about the roof.  that's great for the bottom section, but the top is the part i'm really undecided on

I don't hate it, but I don't love it either...I'm on the fence about it. What about, since you're playing with the pics anyway trying a white stripe? Play with different colors...hell try red, red/yellow combo might be nice.

nope, i had changed saturation before lightness, and saw what it would look like in white, hated it.  just went and played with hue too, didn't like any colors.  if i do this, it will be some form of black

(a mid-dark blue looks good against the yellow, but it's still too flashy for my tastes to do 2 colors)

looks like to get the best pricing, $120-ish will get me 10 yards of 48" wide 3M Matte Black, 2mil, self adhesive vinyl.  anyone interested in any? If i do this, I'll have like 20 feet left over  :-D

says it's designed for outdoor use, vehicle applications are specifically mentioned, claims will last 6-7 years

I think it looks ok, but not a big fan of painting the wing.  Since the wing visually matches up with the parts of the roof that are still yellow, it should remain yellow.

I very strongly dislike spoilers that don't match the base color of the car.

^ the thin strip above the rear side window?  you're right....something was throwing me off about that, but I couldn't put my finger on it.  I'll try a rendering leaving the yellow wing, thanks!

(also, I has having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to go about wrapping that part )

okay dave, youre' right, leaving the spoiler yellow is a good thing  (just means I have some more scratches to buff out rather than cover up)

still VERY undecided on touching the trunk or hood.  The only reason I ever even considered doing the trunk was to balance out the hood part.  If I leave the hood alone for now then I won't be touching the trunk.

but I think I'll at least go for the roof and front bumper.  I do like the roof part, if the bumper looks that bad in person, well, it'll hold me over to find a replacement at least
