04 STI Shock Replacements...
« on: March 22, 2010, 12:22:07 PM »
Sooo...It appears that I MIGHT need to replace a shock or two (or the whole set if I am feeling rich at the time). I am getting a bit of thud in the rear of the car and when I stop at a light, it feels like the rear of the car squats down. I believe the car had the rears replaced under warranty. But I don't know how long ago that was. They might just need to be regreased but if I get it apart and they are blown, I would like to know my options.

Now, from what it appears, it seems like the 04 STI was an odd year for shocks? Something like the 02-03 shocks fit it, is that the case? I know when I went to advance auto, I asked if they had anything just for the fun of it. They listed OE replacements as KYB GR2's...  I am not looking to spend more than about $100/shock if possible. So coilovers or $1000+ suspension is out of the question. Thanks in advance!

A little more expensive than you were looking for, but I'm looking at this for when my rears blow:

The used ones develop the same problem, so it's not worth trying to do that.

$150 a shock is pretty cheap.

Have you tried lifting the car up and spraying the exposed shock with a good lube yet?

Pull them out and regrease them. We did mine a few months ago when i got the same clunking. If you want you can put a grease nipple on them too. Cost equals 10 bucks for grease and beer for helpers.

Depending on who you have help (I'm not going to mention names), that can get expensive quick :-D

It's best to check and made sure that's the problem by spraying some lube on them first. Saves you taking them all apart to find out they are truly blown.

Check out the tokico's posted earlier from TiC, they should be cheaper and I think they have mostly positive reviews on Nasioc.

After even more research, found this VERY valuable resource:

http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2154391

Probably going to go with the D-Specs (http://www.maperformance.com/tokico-d-spec-adjustable-shocks-struts-wrx.html) even though I now know that I COULD use some cheap KYB's... but maybe this will help someone else out that is only looking to spend ~$100/strut

I'd still call up TiC and see if they'd be willing to price match.

In case anyone is in a similar situation... Just bought a set of NEW Tokico D-Specs off ebay for $440 + $55 s&h. The seller has 1 set left and it's item # 120588841859.  I had to "submit offer" to get them for that price. Woot!  :-D  Now to buy some spacers & extenders from TiC...

Have you already purchased your springs? If not, buy a set that has higher rates to account for the better struts, if you go the D-Spec route. If you want to see how RCE springs ride, let me know ;)

I might have to go for another ride in the dip-mobile. I'm thinking of either staying with the stock STI springs or going with either RCE's or some pinks...hmm I might be dipping into the savings too   lol  :-o
