Wheel color opinion
« on: March 28, 2010, 12:47:19 PM »
I'll be buying new wheel's in the next couple weeks. I'm ordering 17 inch Rota Grids. I can't decide which color I'd like to order. My choices are gun metal or gold. I drive a silver 07 wrx. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks, Corey

Bright "go to hell" fluorescent yellow.  Just for the sake of suggesting something different.

Or you could be excessively boring and get [insert color here] with a polished lip.   They don't offer full polish Grids, do they?

I don't think the Grid is offered in gunmetal or gold with a polished lip.

Most of the wheel colors lately are pretty boring and almost all of them are seriously overdone.  The one that really caught my eye was the newer blue-colored wheels.  It's a beautiful dark blue metallic that looks very nice.  Outside of that, I can't say I favor anything aside from white.  Not many people are rocking white wheels these days.

Do they have Steel Grey or Hyper Black in your Fitment?  I'm a big fan of both.

MachIII is where i just ordered my rotas from.  they might have different inventory than wheeldude and others.  You should give em a call or send them an email.

on a silver car, with those two options....100% gunmetal.  I personally hate gold and silver together

however, blue would look really good

Yea, I'm leaning towards the gunmetal. I think it would look good. Not sure what would look better; the gunmetal with or without the polished lip. Any good photoshoppers on here that can help? Thanks guys

I think the gunmetal without the polished lip is the winner. Just need to decide on the size. I was going to get the 17x7.5's.

I like my PSM / BBS Gold combo

Just need to decide on the size. I was going to get the 17x7.5's.

If they're available in 8" width, get them. Most people don't run wider than 245s, and my Hankooks fit nicely on my 17x8 BBS. Even if you only run 235s, it would probably be nicer on the 8" wide wheel.

looks like I'm getting closer to that 2,000 post mark too  :crazy2:

why is it always "get something at least 8in wide" around here?  Is there a reason 7.5 is no good? Or a reason anyone would need wider than 8in just for driving around on the street every day?  I'm curious as I'm still running stock wheels, but will be getting other wheels eventually too

Yes there is a reason.  You can fit wider tires, one of the big reasons for upgrading wheels.  I mean, you're spending money, if the same rim .5 inches wider and basically the same price, why not go for it anyway?  Hell i've ordered 16's and even they are 8" wide.

I have no problem if people upgrade wheels for looks.  But the cool thing to do these days is to say everything is 'for performance'.  I love Rota, I do, Phillipines Rock On.  But most of their wheels aren't exactly light, so you may as well get wider rubber to make up for a decrease in accelleration.

well, that was one of my concerns, how does a wider tire make up for decreased accelleration?  Isn't that just that much more weight?

245 seems to be a popular "stopping point" in terms of tire width on Subarus, which can fit on an 8" wheel. While 245s are probably be better suited on an 8½" wheel, this allows you to run wider tires while still keeping weight to a minimum. If you will never run a tire wider than 235, then you can get away with a 7½" wheel.

I only suggest an 8" wheel because it isn't that much different in weight, and in case you decide to step up in the future, you won't be limited by the wheel width.

well, that was one of my concerns, how does a wider tire make up for decreased accelleration?  Isn't that just that much more weight?

More weight at each corner
Increased contact patch = more resistance

Speed/Handling - which do you value most? Personally, my car is fast enough for what I've done to it. The difference between my OEM 225/45/17s and my 245/40/17s is almost a full inch of increased contact patch; I can't wait for it to get warmer so I can start having fun up in the hills

Thanks for the help guys. I can understand the 8 inch width arguement. I was going to run 235's on my car. The grids come in 17x7.5, 17x9, 17x9.5, 18x8.5, 18x10 and 18x9.5. What do you guys think I should get with those options? Dave, how much heavier are these wheels? The last thing I want to do is decrease performance in my car. I understand that I will be greatly increasing my handling performance with the new tires, I just don't want to lose to much in acceleration. Thanks again everyone. Corey

If there is no 8" option for the Grids, go with 7.5; the extra weight of 8.5/9.5 would most likely not be worth it.

Let's use the Rota Grids in 17x7.5 in this example; they're a little over 18lbs each.

The OZ Alleggerita HLT (17x7.5) weighs a little less than 15.5lbs

That's an approximate rotational weight savings of 10-11lbs at the wheels, and can be equated to ~50lbs of static weight reduction (this multiplier value is debated, some say up to 1:10, but I did a moderate guesstimate).

Jeez, forgot they jumped up like that in width.  Well look at it like this.
Every inch wider you get, you get an extra inch wide strip of metal added to the outside of the wheel equal to the circumference of the wheel, making wight gain all too easy.

If you're set on these wheels, a 235 will fit with some 'meat' on the 7.5's, but the sidewall may feel a bit squishy for you, even if the absolute grip increases on a wider tire.  If you get the wider ones, you can fit your 235's and if you want to start racing seriously at some future date you can definitely just stick some fatties on there instead of buying new rims.

You have an EJ255 which was underrated from factory anyway in your car.  I say the width is worth it, in my opinion, as I like wide wheel/tire combos.  ALSO, your car may be 'technically' slower by some stupidly small amount(like a .1 second reduction to 60mph), but it might not feel slower, and you can grip and rip in the corners anyway.

Here are 3 wheels/tires I've run and their weights, which i found kinda remarkable.
-JDM Subaru V7 STi 17x7.5's with 235-45-17 Kumho ASXs-44 pounds
-JDM Subaru V5 STi 16x7's with 225-60-16 RE-92 Potenzas-44 pounds
-Generic brand 5-spoke Tire Rack Specials 18x8's with 245-45-18's Kumho ASXs-44.5 pounds
Though there was almost no weight difference, the distrobution of weight in the wheel/tire combos was very different but did not noticeably effect performance.  This was on my Baja Turbo with the same engine as you and a full 3" turboback and tune.  The only difference I felt was a lack of wheelspin with good tires.
