"A Lower initial salary.  Then we can control the amount of overtime you are allowed and protect our bottom line without setting foot wrong on a salary contract."

Be careful with that pitch.  Could backfire.

I agree with him. Take lower(ish) salary, work hard and make yourself hard to replace, then demand more.

Unfortunately this company is not good about rewarding for hardwork. They are content with giving you a salary and keeping you there for ever. 4 years after promoting me to Foreman they are finally looking at giving me an equity raise to get me close to where the other Foremen in the company are. If I get this job and take the salary they mentioned yesterday I would be losing atleast $15k a year.

I do not know if I am reading this wrong but this sounds like a shaft wrapped up as a gift. Unless the job is better/nicer/cushier in some way that would make a pay cut worthwhile, I would turn it down. Keep the job that pays more money, takes less work without as much responsibility. Let them want you. They already have you in their mind as someone who can do the job.

On another note, I have a phone attached to my hand and it is not always the most fun situation.
Whoever smelt it dealt it.

It's a slippery slope accepting more more more, with less less less.  You said yourself that they don't reward dedication very well, so assuming it'll change now may not be a good idea.  Either way, I hope it all works out for you.

Here is an update. A few weeks ago I was approached by my Manager and he told me they were moving my Supervisor to a different department leaving his position open. My Manager wanted to know if I was interested in taking over. To which I said of course.

Today they made the announcement that my Supervisor is taking over another department and I am the interim Supervisor of my dept. Several other people and myself will be interviewed for the vacant spot in the near future. From what I am hearing I am the front runner to fully take over. We have not had any salary discussions yet, but I am willing to take the job and negotiate a decent raise.

Bump

So it has been 2 months since I took the interim position, without any talks of making the position permanent or salary discussions. I have had some conversations with my manager but he has not been able to give me a firm answer on when talks would start. Today I walked into HR and asked her what the deal was. She said that she would talk to manager and see if they are going to offer me the position and when. I also took this time to remind her that salary has not been discussed. During the conversation I told her that I had set a monetary goal for myself even before I took the interim Supervisor job. She asked what that was and I told her what I made last year and that I got an 11%. That 11% on top of what I made last year would put me above the goal I have for myself. She chuckled and said that 11% raise wont happen again. I replied I know that's why I am trying to get my money upfront right now. She also said that nobody ever comes into her office asking when they are going to get a job, it usually HR asking people if they want the job. I told her that she has known me for 9 years and I have never pulled any punches, she already knew that.

So hopefully this will get the ball rolling in one direction or another. If they feel my salary requirement was too high then I will stay in the Foreman slot and make the same money in over time anyway.

Did we read the same post ?  Sounds like typical feet-dragging by a large Corporation.  Either way, I hope it works out for you, and somewhat soon.

Well the final update is here.

I made my initial offer and they countered with 5k below my offer, they based their offer off of my 2010 earnings. I countered their counter. I told them since we are in the 4th quarter of 2011 it doesn't make any sense to base my raise off of my 2010 earnings. So I put together a forecast of what I could make at the end of this year and asked for 5% above that. They agreed and made another offer which was a lot more reasonable. It was actually only $1,100 lower than my initial asking price so I couldn't pass that up. After 3 months and some haggling I got my promotion and it will be announced tomorrow. No comes all the headaches, long hours and late night phone calls that come with being a Supervisor of 3 shifts.

Thanks Dan. There are a lot of head aches right now because QA is crawling up my ass. But in the long run it should make things better around here.

So I went back last night and did some more calculations. The 5% raise was based on my gross income including OT. When I calculated using my base salary and no OT I just walked into a 37.5% pay raise.

nice increase!  BUT will you still be eligible for OT? Or will you be salaried now?

Thanks guys

Yes now I am salaried with no OT, getting paid bi-weekly, which is something new to me and I have to redo my budget. I will be getting occasional phone calls up until about 11:30pm, my 3rd shift Foreman is pretty knowledgeable (he was up for the Supervisor title too) and wont need to call me in the middle of the night unless there is an accident. Hopefully I can limit the time I NEED to be in here on the weekends.Weekdays I can expect to be here from 720 until at least 430 possibly 530.
