Check it out yo.
Car is obviously a mess because it's in pieces everywhere.
Still need to route wires behind dash, but you get the picture.

LOL, the whole car is covered in dust. I bumped my windshield wipers and it rolled dust into 1/2" cylinders on my window. My back seat is taken out, control arms and A arms are hanging, tranny is gone, engine is proped up on a jack, car is sitting on four jackstands, my exhaust is in the laundry room and  you wanna talk about a dusty steering wheel?!?  ;) :D

yup. Put a huge hard drive in it and you can RIP DVD's to the HDD and access them at any time. And you can fit TONS of MP3's in a couple gig of space.

exactly what i was thinking...maybe 200gig HD, easier to buy a carputer or build one? (building one i would probably use a 1U server case for it ) but are there any components that arent normal for a computer build ?

You have to be careful with CarPuters....    Size and noise become big issues.

You can go for small with a small DC-DC power supply for whatever form factor you're using. Or you can try to build a home computer with an DC/AC invertor, just to convert it back to DC again to supply the computer. It becomes VERY bulky and uses a lot of juice. Not just that, but you have Shutdown issues, or if you leave it running while you're gone... no battery left.

A small computer like one built for a car is the way to go, but pretty expensive. The Mini ITX   NOT ATX is really an awesome way to go too. But also, the small size is expensive. However, you can adapt some of your home computer stuff to go with it better and lower the cost.

I think I'm going to go with the mini ITX route. It's going to have to wait though, I think I'm going to buy a FMIC setup from Austrailia.  I can't decide whether I want NOS or FMIC....   Maybe I'll do carputer AND NOS and wait on the FMIC...

Carputer is in.
I used the MiniITX mobo from Via.  the v100000m or something like that
it's 1Ggz processor, onboard EVERYTHING.  I put 256MB DDR RAM in it, 30GB HDD, and a DVD player.

The MoBo with DC DC power supply and voltage sequencer (a must for car computers) was 250 shipped.

It's very sweet.  I just have some small bugs to work out.
