2006/2007 WRX Third Gear Issues.
« on: July 15, 2010, 02:54:51 PM »
So I've been doing some research before modding my new 07 WRX, in lieu of these third gear issues. Im curious what any 06-07 owners on UNYSOC are running for mods and WHP/WTQ numbers. Any issues? How long you been running the mods? Thanks.

07 wrx, stage II (sorry styles i know you hate that). down pipe, exhaust, intake, sti top mount, 17psi, front shift bushings. extra s gear oil at 30k. the butt numbers are somewhere between 280-290 at the crank. ive had it probably for 15-20k and no issues. still pulls as strong as ever. the tranny feels notchy but thats to be expected of these cars esp with the bushings.

my driving style is aggressive, but not harsh. ex. i do hard pulls but almost never redline (except at autox in first twice...whoops), and never dump the clutch. i also never downshift without rev matching.

hope that helped

i have a 06 wrx Stage 2 power wise with lots of bushings to get rid of the "klunk" when shifting hard. I also have almost 110,000 mi on my first/only trans. i have launched it hard a few times(dragstrip once) and drive pretty hard. its my DD. it all depends on how you drive cause i have friends with much less miles and their on the 2nd or even 3rd trans. good luck.

my 06 went from a cobb stg2 setup (45k mi.) to a full out turbo swap and some other crazy mods.  I think eddie has well over 90k on it now with no issues.  He autoX and drags it

My 02's tranny stayed strong until I got rid of it around 130K, only minor clunks when at the drags....(it did totally jump out of first once upon hard launch)
Take the extra split second to be nice to your tranny, you will only end up losing a tenth or two at most.

Its the 315 foot pounds of tq that's easily capable with a tune that makes me nervous on 06-07 wrx. Theres really no point in that much tq, I'm not towing anything...all I want is more hp like 300whp and 250wtq. I talked to EFI logics and they can easily do that with the tune with a vf43. Guys are stripping 3rd from what I have seen simply getting on it around 2500rpms which would make sense considering thats where all the tq is made, so either detune or dont punch it untill your over 3500.

Torque is what helps you coming out of corners.  I would want as much as possible if it were my car.

If the car weighed less....

I understand your concern.  High boost from little turbos makes the low-end torque.  Horsepower and Torque are really the same thing, one is just a mathematical derivative of the other.

and not caring about torque numbers is rediculous.  torque is what wins races for unless you are going for some long straight race and not shifting alot.  there was a huge long thread on nasio c about it a while back.  if i get more bored i will find it.

I do want tq, hence my extra concern, I'm just trying to stay within the parameters of the transmission. Moving that low end tq curve 50% higher above the stock map at 2000-3000rpms just makes me nervous and for what real benefit...Ill take all they can give me after 3500rpm though, typically I'm reving about that exiting a corner anyway. There's a reason the stock map is a dog until 3500rpm as is, subaru is playing it safe. Im more interested in my top end with my tune.

So set a more conservative timing advance and boost curve until a higher RPM.  It's not rocket science.  You can do it with open source tuning.  Either that or just order up a PPG or type RA gearset and throw it onboard so you can asshat around with a more forgiving drivetrain.

i have an 07 wrx and i have blown my third gear twice, i have a dom tune and i estimated my power at about 275 hp 300tq, i have catless dp, cobb catback, injen intake, i just recently got my transmission built with ra gears by rallispec, stock 3rd gear is jsut like paper thin, cant take the power, but my buddy has a 06 wrx with 112k on his original tranny with a cobb stage 2, but that is a weak and safe tune buit u could go that route

I think it comes down to the driver personally, just an opinion. I had like ~310 at the crank in my car and it has 135,XXX and the tranny was still going strong when I waved her goodbye.

what happened exactly when it went each time? miss shift? floored it at high or low rpm? trying to understand...the cobb tune is a bit more conservative than your dom tune so that would make sence. i want to get a tune at efi logics but, i want to keep my tq numbers down away from 300. i can't go much over 14psi from what they are telling me....i would be happy with 250whp 260wtq.

Yeah, so I have a VF43 ready to throw on my 06 TR.  The reason it's still sitting in a box in my spare room?  The transmission makes me nervous.  Should I just buy an STi?

I have not and never will autocross the car.  I always shift nice and slow and smooth.  Extra S in the transmission and fresh gear oil in the rear end.  BUT, I do like to go WOT when possible.  A six speed swap is just way too much money to make it worth it.

Any opinions/ideas?

good write up on a comparison of a few gear sets. looks like the gears from 03-07 WRX are identical. The torque from the 2.5 in 06/07 with an agressive pro tune combined with the new final drive ratio is causing the issue. If you stay under 260wtq though the stock setup should hold from what i have researched.

there's no set number thats safe for a tranny but a 2.5L can make great power(260whp) with like stg2 and maybe ewg

i have a 2.0L with inlet vf39 820cc oem intercooler :-o walbro and uppie and TBE and some other stuff i made 263whp and 240tq on a mustang

and it feels real good
