Listen here.... New Jack !
« on: July 19, 2010, 01:00:07 PM »

 What's up guys ?

Well, I've made the plunge, just bought my first Subaru.  I bought a 2002 Silver WRX Wagon, bug-eye FTW.   72k Miles, 1 adult female owner, no mods !

I'll have pics up soon.

A little background on myself:   28 Year old guy, Technician @ GE Energy, and I live in Troy NY on River Street.
I've been driving modded and or "fun" cars since age 16.  I've owned 7 SR20 powered cars, a few of them turbocharged.  I've had a turbo RX-7 (fc3s), and just sold 3 weeks ago my built block Mazdaspeed Protege.  I'm hoping my Subie experience is a good one.  I think I got a good deal, and reliable car. It was hard to find a unmolested 1 owner WRX wagon, but I found it.

I'm up for local meets and things like that, so I'll keep an eye out for meets / events.

I'm looking to "gently" mod the Wagon, and was thinking that a  Borla Hush CBE, w/ a catless down-pipe and up-pipe would be a good route to go.  I'm not looking to go mod crazy, just want to get that rumble a bit deeper  :0)

 See ya around.

Loved my FC, but not the 20 year old bolts it had....hahaha.      Yes, I'm an avid snowboarder, so getting to the mountain is a great plus.  I can't wait to get my side skirts painted and a minor exhaust set-up going on the bug-eye wagon.

 Thanks !

That's a great route to go. Do that and remove the intake snorkel and get a tune (best) or a Cobb Accessport (ok) to maximize the TBE and the uppipe.

Right on.  Any advice on the exhaust ?  (i know, it's preference)  I'd really like to keep it quiet, and low-key looking, that's why I thought the Borla Hush or MadDad whisper would be a good choice.

I know once in a while Dom comes to tune locally, but who else is there ?  Moon ?  The AccessPort is cool, but I feel like it's just such a blind tune that the AFR's can't be that good....   Thanks guys !

Welcome to the boards  , Welcome to the subaru world.. now  that you "own" one you can technically  "Get it"  . Their is just something about these cars that set it apart from the others..

AWD.. Maybe
able to last a good decent amount of time.. Maybe
the ability to mod it to the motherfucking limit and still get 30mph .. Maybe

Get to hang out with us and eat mad food...  Ya I think so.. LOL

No more looking for a Saabaru huh ?

If you are looking for just sound... Prodrive axleback [Muffler] end of story that is the BEST sounding muffler that "was" on the market  PRODRIVEUSA went out of business like 4 years ago. It retains the 2.5" diameter of the stock exhuast and allows for increased airflow..
When I put just this muffler on my car STOCK it sounded like I was rolling a 3" exhaust .

If you are looking to free up some power as well.. Don't we all  I would also recommend a Up pipe and Downpipe combo. Getting rid of those Cats will leave plenty of room for barking..

Stock TD04 is good till about 18psi with the stock 440cc injectors, You can turn up the boost alittle bit if you want..

Dominic is comming to town one a year like Santa Clause and will be in town this comming weekend for the 2010 year , would be a great chance to meet him and our club and see that we are all decent people.

Unlike the Kohl's parking lot on friday nights people in Albany.

Local parts hook up for Subaru is CapitalandSubaru GMC Subaru in Scotia on route 50. Fred is his name .. you get roughly 10% off on anything.
I take advantage of that almost bi monthly, I am always grabbing something from Fred..  518-399-9999 Fred is the Parts Manager their.. he is also parting out a few 02c bugeyes you might wanna grab some parts from him .. DIRT CHEAP>. He's cool like that...

If you need a hand working alittle bit on your car.. I have some tools , low profile jack , Jack stands and am located in East Greenbush . .Right down the road from you..{ I also do Detailing}

Their are a lot of great people here, even the younger crowd..

Loads of information just start reading.. and don't worry about getting flamed for questions like .. is 1 + 1 = 2 Because we are not like the National Website "North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club" or Nasioc or NATZICOCKS>>> LOL

Welcome aboard again..

"P.S. just because it says hush or Wisper does not necessarily mean quite...
P.S.S.  This is SaabRx

Thanks guys.  I've heard good things about the Forum, and am no stranger to Forum Nazis...lmao.

I've been on enthusiast sites for the past 11 years, and some are good, some not so much...  Glad there is a good crew here.

Where exhaust is concerned, I'd really love to hear more of the boxer motor sound, but not so much that I have people starring and attention from police.  I've hadd a few 3" TBE systems on other cars, and it was just too loud.

And I'm DEF down to eat some food, hahahha.

 Marty,

The Saabaru was wwaayyy too much to insure.  Like $100 more per month....lmao

i believe it.  saabaru means we're talking '05 or '06, right?  gonna always cost more than a similar '02.  probably has 90% to do with the age and 10% to o with the make

All depends on the axleback piece. I have a Helix Downpipe (catted) with the SPT/Borla single tip catback. It is rumbly without being loud. I had the exact same setup with the Borla twin tip it was much louder.

Welcome to the forum! I have a cobb 3" CBE on my STI and its pretty quiet but still sounds amazing 8-) I would highly recommend GMS..You can get a catless TBE for like $425, and their catback is IDENTICAL to the cobb one. Don't mean to throw myself out there, but I have 20% tint setting in my garage for your car  Marty is the man to go to for a detail to get her looking better than new! Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

Thanks for the input, guys.  In all honesty, I'm sure a nice loud TBE would be fine and fun, hell, I'm a car guy....but I can't stand highway drone, and there are just some times when you don't want a stupid loud car (at least for me).

Let's say I did up and down-pipes to my car w/out a tune...  are we assuming the in boost AFR's would be ok ?  I'm used to having a wideband (should buy one) for peace of mind.  I've heard that the '02 WRX ECU is much better at ECU learning when modded, compared the the newer WRX's.  I'd just like to avoid running lean in boost....obviously.   Still sounds like an up-pipe is a good first mod for safety and faster spool...

TBC -

I have an '02/'03 WRX StageII base map we can throw on your car and see how it works.

The guy who wrote the map did a tune for me last year
flutyr525's wife is running that map on her car (you can talk to him about it)
GiveMeBackMyFiletofFish is running a tune from him as well on her '07

If you wanted to drive out to the sticks, I have a few long straightaways that are perfect for WOT datalogging.

Alternatively, if you wanted to simply drive on the stock tune, we can datalog that as well to make sure everything is in check.
