Good Tire Shop Near Troy?
« on: September 02, 2004, 12:24:53 AM »
Does such a thing exist?  I need to get new tires soon, either Continnetal ContiExtremes or Yokohama AVS dB s2 's.  I need to get an alignment done too and want to do both at the same time.  Can anyone recomend a good shop for either or both of these?  I am not looking for a performance alignment, just want someone who knows what they are doing to do it so the car handles well.

Edit: don't listen to me.  I suggested grand prix in east greenbush, but as you'll see below, that apparently wasnt a good suggestion :(

I too am in the same boat of needing a tire shop.  I just ordered new wheels

grand premier sux0rz. Worst tire place ever. Too bad my old roommate "redroof2" doesn't have internet right now, but everytime we go to grand premier they freakin give us a hard time about not buying the tires from them. They whine about some sob story and then tell me that I should have bought my victoracers from them at $190-200 per tire, when tire rack sells them for $154 per tire. Good f-ing luck there buddy. Then he wants to charge me $80 to put the tires on, and THEN they nic up the inside of my advans.

So, I don't like them.

Buy your tires online, then find a random shop to put them on.

Just have APG put them on.  They work with high-end chrome wheels all the time, so I feel comfortable that they know what they're doing and they haven't messed anything up the last two times I had them mount/balance tires.  As far as price it is about the same as anyone else, 15-20 per wheel + tax.

I had APG install my Azenis after KOST tire and muffler completey messed up one of my rims.  I would recommend APG for tire installations. The only thing I ddn't like was the APG decal they put on my back windshield without asking me first.

As for alignments-  I have no idea of a great shop in the area.  I will go to a shop in CT that lets you sit in the car when they do the alignment-

good luck

shit that sucks, I donno, theyve always been pretty good to me, I had to go get plugs there before and winter tires, get tires mounted and stuff.  when I bought wheels and tires for my mustang I took them there to be mounted & balanced and they said "How come you didnt buy tires here?" but if they jack the prices up that much, I guess I'll order them :(

I'll prolly go to discounttiredirect.com, shipping is free over there.

actually I checked and tirerack is still cheaper even with shipping not being free.

I wasnt clear in my last post when I said I bought tires and wheels for my mustang, I got them both online (the only tires Ive ever actually purchased at grand prix are cheapo winter tires)

although I'm not too fond of a place that would put a sticker on my car w/o asking me (APG)

does APG sell tires?  maybe I'll just give them a shot anyway.  we'll see I guess.  I might go see what grand prix says about the price of some kumho's anyway, cause like I said, I've had pretty good experience with them (aside from that whole "how come you didnt buy tires here" thing, but that was no big deal, I just told them I didnt know they even carried nitto 555s)

actually fugg it, I'll just stay away from grand prix.  my friend informed me that it wouldn't be very kosher of me to continue giving them business when you guys have gotten fugged.  what the hell do I know :( haha

I'd much rather buy the tires locally though cause the last time I ordered tires the sidewalls were all marked up from shipping. (I had a nasty ring around one tire)

so I guess I'm in the same boat as this guy, specifically I am wondering where I can pick up some kumho's around here

Thanks guys,  Will broadway Auto  mount and balance tires too?  Also.. Where is APG?

On a side note..what do you guys like for A/s tires?  I may get a second set of wheels with summer tires next year so I am leaning toward a more agressive A/S, but would still like it to perform well.

I'm assuming that A/S stands for "all season" and not autox/street  -
BF goodrich kdw
Kumho MX

both seem to be great 3 season tires-  and probably would be useless in the snow.  If you are going to have an extra set of rims, you may want to think about putting some dedicated snow tires on them- and then some summer tires on the other set.  Then you can have the best of both worlds :D

If you are thinking of summer tires- you would have to add Falken Azenis to that mix, and the BF goodrich KD

IMO for a decent high performance tires go with Kumho MX, the Falken Azenis, or Yokohama AVS ES100s,  can't find much better of a tire for the money. And....I've never bought snow tires or all-seasons, so I wouldn't know what to get, hehe
