Friend to drink beer with and laugh at how ridiculously awesome this idea was
Band aid to cover your wound when you accidentally slip with the drill and hit your leg while the bit is still turning....
Step 1: Obtain a street sign legally (a stop sign happened to be almost the exact same size as my 07 plastic under tray).
If you can't do that then go spend $200+ on an aluminum skid plate.
Step 2: Take off the plastic under tray. If mother nature or a mother f*ckin pot hole ripped it off, skip to step 3. Use the flat head and needle nose to get the plastic pop connectors off. Use the 12mm socket to take of the other 5 bolts holding it on (at least for an 07 wagon there were 5).
Step 3: Reflect with a friend about how awesome this is and have a beer.
Step 4: Measure the distance between the holes that hold the under tray on (a pen and paper is handy for this).
Step 5: Take the sign and do a mock fit under the car to see where it will best line up with the holes. Have the friend hold it in place while you make a mark on the sign on the edge where the holes line up.
Step 6: Transfer the measurements onto the sign in line with your marks. Try to get it centered.
Step 7: Drill the holes out. Do a smaller pilot hole and then a bigger hole a hair bigger than the bolt diameter. Try not to wound yourself.
Step 8: Test fit the sign and make sure its not rubbing on anything. If it is rubbing, find the spot it's rubbing and mark it. Take the sign off and place a towel underneath it and on top of it. Use the mallet and hit the hell out of it until you put a nice divot in it. Repeat as necessary.
Step 9: Put the sign back up and put a couple of washers on there in between the bolt and sign to really hold it in place.
Now you are good to go
