Caz:  I'm not sure I understand what you're proposing.

I think he's saying that with lower grip tires in the snow they won't cover up mistakes or get you into bad habits in the snow like a good snow tire might. Just like you should start racing/autox on steet tires rather than jumping right to slicks.

use the grimmspeed 2X gasket set for every gasket. my .02 after doing multiple uppipes/downpiipes on the bugeyes. gives you that much more assurance against leaks is all...and going back into her multiple times to re torque gets old quick...

I've lived upstate and in driven stick in snow for 12 years w/ various FWD, AWD and RWD cars, and know how to drive in the snow just fine, no bad habits just careful thoughtful driving.  Snow tires don't breed irresponsible drivers, irresponsible drivers do.  The second portion makes sense, though I am not an Auto-Xer so I'll take your word on it.

Kidzhc:  I bought all Gruppe S gaskets, the "extra thick" ones.  Should work perfectly.

The WRX is the most fun car I have ever driven in the snow hands down. It's so effortless to drift it controllably...

^^^^^^^ :-D  :2funny:

Stock suspension is arguably better suited to controlled winter driving than stiff bars and links...

Yep, played that game on coilovers.  I usually watch rally crash videos before i go driving first snow in winter, a sobering reminder.

Spoolordie:  I'm swapping in a catless Sti pipe, so either way a new gasket is needed.

How did I ever miss this thread.

I prefer to stay away from messing with Subaru tunes.  They blow up easily enough on their own.  They don't need my help.

That being said, sure you can pay for a tune.  Sure you can pay a reputable tuner to throw a custom tune onboard.  Sure, his tune might well do better than your own.  However, tuning it an iterative process.  Things need to be reviewed and adjusted.  Fuel trims need to be logged,  scaling needs to be calculated,  knock needs to be reviewed, etc.   If you're competent enough to understand and patient enough to proceed with such tasks, kudos to you.  You are more knowledgeable than the majority of assholes who think just buying a car that makes a PSSHT sound automatically puts them at the top of the automotive food chain.

If I ever am forced at gunpoint to own a turbo subie, I won't pretend I know a thing about tuning it.  Even good tunes result in broken parts...   which is why I've come to know these cars so well, mechanically ;)

I've never ever tuned a Subaru.  I've only had this car two months...  I have tuned via the previously mentioned EMS', some systems better than others.   I haven't heard of such terrible problems with FI Subies, maybe it's ignorance, IDK.  It's that bad ?  I get the feeling that these cars get their asses handed to them on the regular by what's probably a substantial portion of current owners, I could be wrong though.  Even if I didn't end up tuning my own car, I'd still like to have some sort of real working knowledge of how to properly tune a Subaru ECU and how it works compared to others.

You're right.  They do get their asses handed to them more often than a lot of other cars out there.

Tuning ANY car on the long term is an iterative process.  Always a fine, simple adjustment and recheck the results, repeat ad nauseum.  Sure you can bake a tune in a day that will make the car drivable, but who actually goes back in to check LTFT, knock count and end up readjusting their MAF/Injector scaling or timing to ensure the car isn't always driving with some sort of correction factor involved?  Or maybe the temperature dropped 25 degrees in a day like it did recently and now the comp's registered enough knock to apply a lower advance multiplier?  Who's checking their tunes and looking at what the computer's doing now that the weather has changed?  Prolly nobody.

Yep, I totally agree.  Most people won't adjust their tune or even log it, after an initial "safe" tune has been established.  Weather is a huge factor of tuning, and surely warrants a solid day of logging and re-working your map to ensure things are safe considering the new air density and temp.  Iterative is the word.

Iterative is the word.

I thought Bird was the word.  Bird. Bird.  Bird is the word.

Or maybe that's just what a Subie enthusiast's wallet does to him after he fixes #4 for the umpteenth time ;)

On unequal length header setups, yeah.  I also question the feed of the stock fuelling system.   I'm someone who enjoys symmetry - like dual feed rails on an inline 4.  Maybe it's just my OCD or paranoia hitting, but the subie motor could use a lot of improvement.

Oh ok, right on.  I'm a lot like that too though.  When I ran meth on one of my SE-R's, I did a custom 4 nozzle system, that fed each individual intake manifold runner, rather than just throwing one nozzle in my intercooler pipe right before the throttle body.  OCD and car modding is tough...lmao.
