48 hours of tristate *January 12-16, 2011
« on: October 08, 2010, 03:14:16 PM »
Alright, who's going this year?  I think it was just Miguel, Fred, Terry and myself from UNY last year and it was a blast.  I'll be back again this year.  I have already sponsored this event and donated an enclosure for raffle, might throw in some shirts, decals and speaker rings if i get some stock built up as well. This year it starts and ends in NY which is also nice.

Best thing about this Rally, it raises money for the american cancer society.  Last year 32,000 was raised

Sounds cool, but I don't get it.  Where / when do you sleep ?  And a CB Radio is really required ?

You sleep at a hotel of your choice at the different stops.  They set up group rates at hotels, so you can ave a little there.

A CB isn't required but it sure makes things fun!  They use them to joke around, give directions, talk, and spot out coppers

Agreed!  The weather is sooo unpredictable in the northeast.  I would have to get stranded someone for days because of a storm.

I'll have to pass, even though the Charity part is appealing especially if a Cancer benefit.  I just can't dedicate a weekend to blowing $$, racking up 1,000 miles, and being stuck in a car the majority of two days etc.  Wow, day after day I realize how lame I'm getting in my increasing age....

Lol only 1k miles?  I think I was closer to 1600 last time.

Did they fix the whole time management thing from '09?  Also, is broken motorsports still a sponsor?

It's pretty unfair of you to say that.  I was on this rally last year and saw no such thing other then an empty parking lot and 1 car at a time while a couple of us were on a rally stop.  The people who i have seen attend this event are very well behaved, the event is well organized, and it's a good time.  Please don't try to smear it in this thread, it's a great event and it's for an even greater cause.

If you've never done a 100+ car rally before, you have no idea what you are missing

oh, no! i didn't mean it as a smear.  I was just saying that in response to your "suck it up, you have AWD!".  I only meant that AWD doesn't save you from everything. And an open invitation event in snowy weather based around cars can be very tempting for screwing around.

Sorry if I was unclear.  I appologise and I think it's a GREAT way to do a fundraiser, I just wish they ran it in better weather is all, then I'd be very interested in doing it  :-)

sorry.

last year the weather was really good, roads were clear and i don't think it snowed at all.  But there is no way to tell what will happen this year.

I have done this drive more than once. The first year through a huge snow storm which was actually a lot of fun. I have never felt unsafe at any point on these trips. We even went through an optional portion last year which was the pine Barron trails. These were jeep roads with 30 subarus ripping them up. Id recommend this drive to anyone who likes driving. The stop at Vermont sports car alone makes it worth it. You get to see all the professional Subaru drivers rally cars and where they build them. The only person that has done a whole trip with me so far was Dave. People came in for a day or two as well. It would be nice to have a well known group do the entire drive together.  Simon is always on the drive as well.
Whoever smelt it dealt it.

I'll be attending as well.  Think I'm co-driving with someone as I don't want to do all that driving myself.

It really is a great time.  I think for the longer drives they are going to set up smaller groups so we don't have a line of 50 cars on the highway again, but instead 4 groups of 10-15.  Again, I think, but this should help with congestion.

Always a great time.

I talked to a few of the guys running it the last time I went about running a unysoc-only small pack, and they seemed to think that might be a good idea.

I'm interested in doing it again, but it all depends on my relationship status and finances.  I'm a stupid bastard and would drive the whole thing, since I enjoy it, but company in the car is a must.

I may go with Tyler from the boards.  He expressed interest in taking his Impreza for some of the trip.  Not sure if we'd do the whole thing.
