Anyone like R/C or models?
« on: January 17, 2011, 03:23:07 PM »
Just wondering if anyone else around here like to play with toys like I do. It seems I never grew out of wanting to play with remote control toys.  Here is a picture I took when most of it was out so I grabbed almost all of the rest of it.

In the picture is:
Little electric car that drives on water (green wheels)
My nitro truck- savage4.6
Airsoft Tank
8 different helicopters from 3 to 5 channel
my quadrocopter
and the Rovio remote camera

I also have a bunch of little cameras I attach to some of them and drive em around First Person view style. My video glasses are on the table there too.

Also always like models too. I am building a train set in my basement now. I am a couple of months in but it is starting to look pretty cool.

Built the table

Designed a multi-level layout

added some Styrofoam
Whoever smelt it dealt it.

the quadrocopter is the gaui 330x-s. I just ordered a new 8ch transmitter so hopefully I can use it to its full potential. They are often used to fly cameras around. It can lift 1100 grams and the gopro is 350 grams. That would be a pretty sweet autocross camera view . As for the train, yes it is HO scale. I started it as a project to get me through the winter days I didn't not want to go in the cold. It has turned into a monster project because of all of the ideas I keep adding. I will keep adding to those pictures as I progress.

True that. Thus us why i sold my T max and Revo. Its schweet because no waiting for batts t charge but rebuilding a motor with a piston smaller then a dime. Those things can take one hell of a beating

Is the quadracopter the AR Drone? I picked up a used Ipod so I could get the AR, I just havent pulled the trigger yet.

Last week while Christmas shopping I stumbled upon a kiosk selling r/c helicopters. I was drunk enough that I was going to buy a 4ft helicopter for $180 :uglystupid2:. Fortunately my buddy had my back and talked me out of the big one, so I bought a small one for $85. I have had fun flying it but it is very limited. So today I finally bought the AR Drone. I've been looking at them for more than a year and really wanted one but just never bought one. Today I finally got to the point where I decided that at some point I was going to buy one so why delay. I left work, went to HobbyTown and picked one up. I think the main thing that made me buy it was that there is an Android app for it now.  So I picked a backup battery and hope to be flying this thing soon. This week should be a good time to fly it around work. Our plant is shut down for the week except for my dept., and I am the Supervisor, so I can get away with flying it around the plant for a while.  :-D

I used to work at HobbyTown, so you'd think I'd have billions of the things...  But I've got:
• An original Traxxas Rustler (at this point the only original piece is the chassis)- This had a 5400mAh LiPo, the Traxxas VXL system, and tons of other... personal tweaks.
• An EFlite CX2 (with the red body)
• A HobbyZone (IIRC) Ultra-Micro P51 (the most fun R/C I've ever had)
• An HPI E10 with the R32 body.  I painted the calipers red and the discs buffing metallic steel.  Tried running it with the VXL system, destroyed every piece of plastic in the drivetrain.
• A Tamiya CC-01 (IIRC) with the Land Cruiser body (painted in the proper Desert Tan that Hammond's Land Cruiser was in the Top Gear Bolivia Special) and lights.
• A Traxxas Blast, heavily modified for running the VXL system that was scavenged from the Rustler after I got tired of stripping gears.
• An HPI Micro-RS4 with the FD RX7 body and lights.  It happens to be drift spec, but it's all I could find on eBay.  Currently has a bent axle from letting a 13-yo drive it.
• A Losi Micro Rally.  Ran it once on the Losi LiPo, and it stripped the pinion gear.

I guess I do have billions of the things.  I think only two work ATM, though (just like our real cars! :idiot2:  ).  I would post pictures, but the family headed to Nassau for Xmas, so I can post pics of palm trees, but not RCs.  We also have an HO layout in the basement, but it's not even past the wiring stage.

For my dad's birthday, I made the only model I ever finished:

It's only about 6" tall.
-'00 BRP 2.5RS- rustbucket DD with cheap suspension  :D
-'66 VW Type III 1600 Squareback- Survivor, 42k miles, competing in the Great Race 2012
-'83 944- mostly-un-broken track car
-'84 Fiero- V8 swapped, soon to get new fuel injected LT1

I have a few car models I need to get the motivation to build: 1/24th wagonzilla and an is300.

There's also a metric shit ton of scifi models from my younger days sitting in copy paper boxes somewhere.  Assembled, but never had a place to spray them(primer, at least).

I took mine outside over the weekend and it has lots of lift power but not much forward power. I am thinking it might have been a function of a pretty strong breeze when I flying. The AR Drone on the other hand has been a blast at work today, until I turned a corner with it and the Saftey Manager was standing there. My first flight with it was very uneventful. Not much control and constant gaining of altitude when I was trying to go forward. During the 2nd flight I realized that if you tilt the phone forward while moving forward the Drone will pitch forward and you will get more forward movement then upward. I also found this useful for braking before running into one of the walls. Tilt the phone bakwards and it will pitch upwards kind of like hitting the air brakes. A few more indoor flights this week and I will be ready to take it outside, once the weather warms up and the wind dies down. I have read many a horror story abotu gusts of wind taking these things for one helluva ride.

If I didn't have 3,000,000 other hobbies, I'd probably really get into automotive or military models. I built a lot of automotive models until I was a teenager and really enjoyed it.

Played around with my friends RC stuff, even scratch built an airboat using a weedwacker engine, plywood, and some fiberglass. It was slow and heavy, but it worked.
Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

My main RC focus is crawling but I'm also into helis and planes.  Drive and fly regularly. Always on the lookout for new crawling spots.

I don't know where your located, but racing city hobbies in south glens falls is building an indoor course, and the bridge that goes over the hudson from glens falls to south glens falls, has some really great spots under it.

Yeah I heard RCH has a semi finished course now.  I saw it a few m onths ago and was going to take the lead in finishing it this winter unless someone beat me to it.  Sounds like someone did!  Going there Saturday to check it out.  My Berg is not challenged in my back yard.

I'm in Saratoga BTW

Checked out the RCH course earlier tonight. Not bad!  I'd love something bigger but that's not a bad start, I'm just glad to see 1 of the LHS supporting crawlers. Living in the mountains I'm surprised there are local comps, or at least more of a crawler community.

Anyway, after watching some of the races I think I need a short course truck. Those looked like a blast!
