I kinda miss the hood scoop...
« on: January 25, 2011, 08:53:03 PM »
Finally sold the WRX !

Picked up my new car last night.

Navigation/Sunroof/Bi-Xenon package.  Came standard w/6-speed trans, bluetooth, and heated front seats.
Paid $200 over invoice.  The headlights are adaptive so they angle when I'm making turns.  Super smooth acceleration and braking.  It feels nice a solid on the road, I'm taking turns with way more confidence than the Subaru, even when it had strut and sway bars.  Getting 28 mpg w/ mixed city and highway driving.  Not as much torque as the Suby, but a nice car overall.

Now keep in mind folks, this isn't a race car.  I actually wanted a car with lots of "pointless" convenience features.  My days of stripped interiors, no a/c or power steering and super low coilovers are over.  I think I'm becoming an adult!

Future plans:
Black VW emblems
Tinted windows / Gloss black roof vinyl
APR ECU reflash

Sick. I love GTI's. You should get different wheels though, I never really liked those ones. They look like some kind of weapon.

Not a fan of plad interiors, don't get the whole black roof thing, and personally would have gotten the DSG gearbox... but still a nice car.

How much is invoice and did they show you what invoice was on R32's?

I don't mind the wheels.  I may eventually powder coat them black.   8-)  I like the plaid interior quite a bit.  I didn't ask to see invoice or any pricing on the R32, I wasn't looking to spend a ton of money on a car that I don't need.  The owner of where I currently work co-owns where I bought this car so I got good pricing because of that.  I only paid $200 over invoice because they needed to pay a driver to go get it.

As far as DSG goes, it sucks.  Again, not a race car so I don't need "split second" shifts.  I prefer to shake hands with the transmission.  There are lots of guys complaining about the DSG bogging, especially on take off.  It also requires a $400 service every 40K.

Congrats on the new car!  I looked at a few TDIs in my search for a new DD... The fit and finish of the VW interior is miles ahead of the other cars in that price range.

DET 240sx > Everything else above it.

Congrats on the new car though.  The 18" Huffs actual grew on me since first seeing them, and they look great in gloss black.  I test drove a 2009 GTI, and liked it a lot.  Plaid is super preppy, but hey, Volkswagens are all about being pretentious but still middle-class.  Yes, DSG blows.  Get DSG when you're 65 and have a bum right shoulder, otherwise it's silly.  Congrats on the new car man, TBE and tune on that car will do big big things for torque.

I am probably going to drive a free loaner car provided to me by the owner when it breaks down  8-)

Nismonic:  The fit and finish is real nice for the price range, of everything else I could have bought with the same money the VW won out.  The subaru was faster but handles/brakes/feels like a cheap economy car on steroids.  I was planning on buying a TDI for months but backed out because I got the GTI with more options for just a little bit more and was nervous about the DPF plugging up.

TheBigChill: The 240 will always be my favorite car.  I had that for 5 years of slowly sinking every penny a poor college kid has into it.  When I bought my first 240 I was 16 and had no idea what it was and neither did anyone else (except for the guy who sold it to me and mentioned an "SR20").  By the time I parted it out I couldn't drive anywhere without some asking me about "drifting" or "skyline motors."

It's your money, if you're happy with it, that rocks.

No LSD's really really pisses me off in modern cars.  The IS300 was total bullshit: it stickered for over 30 grand in 2002 and LSD was optional.  My 318is stickered for a LOT of money in 1991, like 22-24 grand, but at least it had an LSD.

Autoblog.com writes:

Available power is well down vis-à-vis the frothier 'Speed3 and WRX, though the resultant 6.8 seconds it takes to get to 60 mph isn't exactly leisurely. Taken as a whole, the GTI outclasses most comers: It's plenty quick, and with the new XDS differential that gets subtle brake application into the action, you can get yourself out of corners with more speed and less understeer.

The big news is the electronic limited-slip differential, or XDS in VW-speak. This "Cross Differential System" uses the GTI's existing ABS and stability control program to limit front wheel slip in corners. Once again, Volkswagen cited cost concerns as the reason why they went with an electronic as opposed to a mechanical LSD.

Because of the MkVI GTI's new electronic limited slip, you can get on the power incredibly early when coming out of a corner. We're talking pre-apex here. And this is fantastic, allowing you to attack turns the way you might in an all-wheel drive car. The XDS partnered with the revised suspension means you're at full power more often than not, taking big speed into (and more importantly) out of bends faster than we were expecting given our impression of the outgoing GTI. However, and this is big, driving this way shortens the useful life of the brakes considerably when you push the GTI hard. Remember, electronic LSDs use ABS to stop the wheel from spinning so fade comes on fast.

VW has figured out a way to make a car cheaper to produce and sell, that will actually cost owners more money.

Congrats on the car, definitely a step-up with respect to features and comfort.

Nice car, what will you drive when it's at the dealer?
I am actually using VW's reliability issues as an excuse/defense for an inspection ticket. A sentence from a letter to the DA:

"Mr. X has an excellent driving record and has successfully tracked down emissions and electrical gremlins, notorious in Volkswagen automobiles, allowing him to pass inspection."

Just curious to compare their cost against other AWD competitors.

I drove a Wolfsburg edition Jetta with the DSG and LC about half a year ago.  It never bogged on me once even when testing out LC.  That 40k service sounds steep but I'd hope its just something that any owner with enough know-how could do for much less so long as its well documented.  If I didn't go stage 2, I probably would have purchased a GTI myself.  The leather interior and all the amenities that Jetta had that you can get in a GTI seem awesome for the price.
Yes, DSG blows.  Get DSG when you're 65 and have a bum right shoulder, otherwise it's silly.  Congrats on the new car man, TBE and tune on that car will do big big things for torque.
Whats wrong with taking advantage of modern technology?  I love driving stick but transmissions like these are becoming more popular for a reason.  Hell, Mitsubishi is using it as yet another reason to get an Evo over an STI

I'm just a purist, that's why.  Just not interested at this point in time.  Unnecessary add-ons like this are becoming common place, because we're catering to the fat and lazy who can't bear the thought of having to literally do more than "lift a finger".   God damn it, Kevin, you're making me thread-jack again, and I haaate doing that.

My roomate has a 2010 GTI, APR stage 1.  Stage 1 makes a big difference on these gtis, it's a quick little car, very fun to drive.  Also has a very nice interior too (closer to a audi interior than a vw for sure).  FWD does suck tho, the thing doesn't move with even the slightest bit of snow on the ground.

Congrats on the purchase

In my less than a year of driving, I definitely prefer manual over automatic or anything like it, such as DSG or Tiptronic. I haven't driven any DSG type cars but I can't picture having that feeling of connection to the car that you get with a standard. DSG might be quicker, but unless you hit the track all day, its basically stick shift for those who are scared of the clutch.

Good point Dave.  These cars tend to go through front brake pads very quickly when driven hard due to the way the limited slip and traction control work.

I mean since it'll be a calm DD, I suppose that won't really be a problem though.

I wonder how well that system would actuate a BBK?  IT would probaly not do so well.
