Cliff's notes: Car (2002 WRX, 76,000 miles) has front & rear end damage, I was hit twice, both times I was parked. Ballpark is $4,000 in damage (total).  I can't afford and have no desire to fix it up so I need to sell (money going to getting a used car): What's it worth?

So long story short my car was rear-ended at the end of the summer.  I am a poor grad student so the money from the insurance (it was a hit and run so I would have had to add to it my deductible) went to rent/food/books instead of the car.  Fast-forward and I get hit in a parking lot while I'm parked in it.  Luckily that guy stopped, I've just settled with his insurance.

The car now has no front bumper cover, a dented fender (fist size dent), though I have the cover and it's usable but will need paint, and a damaged rear end (needs trunk, rear bumper cover, tail light and rear bumper pulled out about 5 inches).  It's mainly cosmetic, nothing really structural was harmed (minus the rear bumper/bottom of trunk needing to be pulled out).

Otherwise the car is in good shape. It has 76,000 miles (will hit than today when I drove home, it's at 75,997), engine runs good, transmission is in (pretty) good shape (there's a whirring sound sometimes, but it's not dropping shrapnel when I flushed it). Car is generally pretty nice, and if it had no body damage I wouldn't be interested at all in selling it.

But it has the damage, and the $3,000 - $4,000 to fix it isn't something I'm interested in (again, note that I'm a poor grad student).

So what would this be of value to someone?  I have a friend who fixes/sells cars at auction, and he's interested, but I'm just curious as to what I should charge.
With the proceeds of a sale I'm getting a used car, that needs to last a year and a half, just to get me out of school, and not a have a auto loan when I re-enter the workforce.

Total package list from memory:
2002 WRX, MBP, 76,000 miles
KYB AGX? (the red ones) & Eibach Springs (at 40,000)
1.75 sets of wheels/tires (one has a dent in it) snow/summer (summer is dented wheel/tire)
Red interior lights (everything, including radio)
Some % tint (I honestly forget, it's very light, maybe 50%?)
BPM cat back, HKS down pipe (cut/welded because it didn't fit the cat-back, now it does)
Kartboy short shifter & knob
Some other odds and ends.

Other known problems?
Rear view mirror dimming went on strike
Hole in carpet under the clutch/brake pedal from wear
Hood is faded, will likely need to be repainted as well
Random dents from 9 year existence as car.

Sorry, that's a lot to digest, just trying to figure out what to charge. NOTE: I own the car outright, I'm not looking to make money on this, all money goes to a used replacement.  I'll be happy to add any other necessary information.

Really dude ?  You have a 1st year bug-eye, and you're not even looking on NASIOC for a front fender (assuming it's front) or bumper cover ? That type of shit should be somewhat easy to find....   I know you said you're low on cash:  Part out or trade +cash the aftermarket parts for stock pieces, ideally you end up with some cash, and source the said parts needed.   Two cents offered.

I don't have the time for that. I'd much rather, sell and same day pick up a new car.  I need a car for school/work, can't afford any substantial time without one.

I did look previously, but nothing came up. Front bumper can be put back on, I would imagine front left fender (your assumption was right) dent could be pulled out, not warranting a new fender.

As for the rear, that's going to need a proper shop.  It was pushed right in when someone hit it.

The cash/time issue is it for me. I have zero free time to deal with this.  I'm in the books/at work far too much.

As for pictures, I'll try and get them.  But imagine a crushed rear, both rear quarter panels were "kissed' meaning they have to be pulled out, but only about .5 inches, the real rear bumper is sound, but it (the trunk framework that it attaches to) was pushed in, which now doesn't allow the trunk to shut (trunk is currently taped "shut") so the trunk "framework" has to be pulled out.  My insurance put the rear damage at around $3,000, I forget the actual number.

Ahh, OK.  Now what you're saying makes sense.  Sounds like you know what to do, sell it at a sacrificial price to ensure it moves quickly. GL

I drive it every day.  Car is fine mechanically.  (note: that's not an acceptance of your offer, I imagined it was worth more than that).
I'm between a rock and a hard place here, but I can drive it for as long as necessary (note: it's not inspected, so I'll drive it until the tickets rack up).

Yeah, I am not sure what you expect, but based on my (admittedly limited) experience I would think they best you can do is probably like $2k

KBB in fair is like $7,800, minus $4k or so in body repair, less some money because it's not factory, less some more for other wear and tear.

I don't know how much time you have, but Vinces Junkyard in Marcy used to have a few outback sports.  Im sure could find a front bumper / fender there.  Spend $50 on color matched spray paint, and paint it yourself.  Will it look perfect... probably not, but it could buy you some time ... If you only have $2000 to buy another car with, it could be very hit and miss how well it will run and what it will look like.  You at least known the subie runs good...

Need pics for the rear though.

I would agree with SideShow that $2k would be reasonable.  I would worry about the longevity as well since it has been hit twice. Not to mention it sounds like it could have a tranny issue shortly down the road. Do you have pics?

$2000 is the neighborhood I was expecting, I think much more than that is being a bit optimistic.
I'm hopelessly honest (a bad car sales technique) but that's just how I am, everything I stated is my assessment of the car.

I'll try and get photos.  I'm -- shockingly -- at school right now, so cannot provide pictures.  I'm not looking for trades, I don't think I could ever trade a car.  I would always be comparing the two, whereas money from A going to B some how separates them, at least in my mind.

sadly, at $4k+ for repairs (it's always more than you think it will be), it's probably not going to be worth repairing for most other people either

along with the things SideShow pointed out, there's a little more to it as the next person will have an equally hard time turning it around with the accidents listed on the history if they do repair it

it's a shame, but with repairs being over half the book value it will probably go for parts, not repair....and cars for parts don't fetch as much unless you're parting them yourself

If it were me, I'd be expecting in the $1-2k range  :|

If I were you I would find one of these nice gentlemen and take a good trade. Car is not worth much. That or take Fred's $1000. It will be quick and you can be sure the car will go to a good home (or 50 good homes ).

The black one? Quit playing with my emotions smokey.

NOTE: I'll do my best to get some sort of photo tomorrow, I don't own a camera, so it's either my phone or my computer. I can't take photos tonight as it's rather dark out.  I should have planned ahead, but I wasn't expecting to post this today.

I'm sitting here contemplating the repairs, it's just so eff'n expensive (to me, seeing how I have the cost of repairs to live off of until May) and I worst, I don't have the time to fix it (parts of it) myself. I could easily get most of it done, but it's a time constraint for me.

Again, sorry about the lack of pictures, I'm normally a good person.  I'll sleep on the couch tonight to make up for it.

Parting the car would yield the most $.  If you don't want to then, I'd suggest taking the highest cash offer.  Damaged wrxs are a dime a dozen.  Used stock parts are almost free now-a-days.  If you took the time to part and sell each piece for maximum return, you could get close to $3,000 over time.  But you would have to get creative and sell off tons of pieces.  Hood, bumpers, fenders, doors, trunk, window glass, window regulators, interior pieces, all the aftermarket stuff you have, the unibody to some rally racer, i mean everything...Anyone looking to do all that work prolly won't offer you half of the potential money earned.
