Need help with a few stereo things..
« on: October 03, 2004, 01:32:39 PM »
well, my amp just sh1t the bed, I want to replace it as well as my subs anyway because I'd rather have 1 12" than 2 10" subs, and gain some trunk space.  Anyway, this is the sub I'm looking at:

http://www.cardomain.com/item/IDSIDQ12D4V2

and this amp to go with it:

http://www.cardomain.com/item/KIC04KX3502

and maybe these for front speakers, I donno, Im thinking about kicker also:

http://www.cardomain.com/item/IDSCTX6

Im not gunna mess with components yet, or an amp for my speakers, I will do that someday but for now I just want something better than the stock speakers, which cant handle any kind of bass at ALL. :(

Anyway do the amp and sub seem like a good setup, I'm such a n00b when it comes to this stuff :(

Also, if anyone knows where i can get a single 12" box, that'd be sweet, too.

Actually I might go with one of the Qlogic boxes from sounddomain also.

Another question, those of you with subwoofers in your trunks who own WRX's, where do you guys mount your amps?  right now mine is mounted on top of the box but from what I understand that's not the best place to have it, also if I go to a single sub I probably won't have enuff room on the box anyways.  I'd love to have some sort of rack where I can mount my amp as well as my sirius tuner, right now it's on the pass through thingy :(

Sony xplod amp and polk audio subs.

The xplod amp, I'm not surprised it crapped out on me cause all I hear about is how bad they are and how they're called xplod for a reason  but the price was right.  I was planning on upgrading all that stuff anyways, but the fact that I have absolutely zero bass right now in my car made it more of a priority.  I feel like I'm listening to an alarm clock when i'm driving around :(

what i would do , is just get a good amp, one with more power than the kicker  from the link,  and use one of your 10" polks.    any sub with proper power will sound good.   oh yah, and stick with class AB amps.   not class D. they are tempting, but resist!

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

Amplifier Class is refering to the type of transistors used in the amplification circuit. The classes state what type of response to various frequencies that those transistors reproduce the best. A class D amp is NOT for high end components. they are for subs only. Class A and AB amps are for high end frequencies and clean sound. They work as sub amps...   but work better for speakers in tight sealed enclosures to provide accurate bass sounds, not the high spl inaccurate sounds you get at sound offs. If you get an AB amp you can get good bass and eventually use the amp for something else if you want.

Shrug... I think bass is so important to me because I used to play bass guitar and got to really enjoy how it sounds when bass is loud.  Im not a basshead by any means though... my friend has two JL's (which I traded him for the polks cause I couldnt fit them in my mustang, still kicking myself in the ass for that) and he recently ported his box which made them insanely loud, but its TOO fugging loud.  it does nothing but hurt your ears.  I didn't tell him that though.  I guess I should have cause he told his bf (cough cough) that my exhaust sounds like sh1t.  so whatevs.  but I digress haha.

thanks for the explanation Dom.. it is much appreciated
