Sideskirt Painting
« on: February 11, 2011, 10:45:05 PM »
I know what you're thinking. This is already a thread. But it didn't answer my question when I searched. So I was wondering how much the paint and supplies would cost to paint sideskirts. It wouldn't be the end of the world if I messed it up and had to sand it down and repaint. It would be a good way to try out painting.

$5 for sand paper, $5 for primer, and $5 for spray paint?  In a word: cheap.

And be sure to get the kind specific for plastics, so it's flexible and doesn't crack/chip in a month

You can get WRB paint for $5? What about clearcoat?

You never said your car was WRB.  That will most likely cost you more.  I was able to get a silver from Lowe's that matched PSM pretty well.  I forgot about clear coat.  Add another $5 lol

WRB is a pearl... going to be kind of hard to duplicate out of a spray paint can. Not saying it can't be done, just more difficult.

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

Probably should have mentioned that I could use the HVLP spray gun my dad has at his shop. Then I could just get a gallon or so of color matched paint, primer, and clearcoat. I might have some left over for touchups/repairs to other parts later on too.

A gallon is overkill city if you're just doing the side skirts for now, 8 ounces should be plenty.  And if your side skirts are just the black plastic now you're going to need a raw plastic adhesive kit to make sure the paint sticks.  check out Auto-body supply of Albany 931 3rd Street, Albany - (518) 489-5443.  They can mix ANY color you want into an spray able aerosol can as well.

Correct, they matched the Sedona Red on my old legacy really well.  With patience, it can look good.

dont use any spray cans on your car. sand down the parts to remove texture. finish with 320 grit. prime with a high build CATALYSED primer, and buy paint from autobody supply. trust me i do this stuff everyday' and this is how i did mine when i painted my car. it also helps to let the parts sit for a week or 2 after priming so the primer can dry and shrink completely. use a black spray paint and apply a mist coat to use as a guide while your sanding (guide coat). finish to 600 grit and base coat clear coat. dupont chroma system matches good and covers nice. your side skirts dont flex enough to have to worry about the paint and primer cracking. good luck  .

Many local paint shops will mix you up and color as long as you have the paint code. In spray can, pen or brush.  If you want i can give you the number to a place located near me that would probably ship.

Some possibly helpful info:
Paintscratch.com aerosol cans are about $30-$35 per.  If you order $100 bucks worth of stuff, they drop the shipping. Ended up with 4 or the cans for $100.  Their other supplies are way overpriced, you'd be better off picking them up at bLowes, Home Despot, any of the auto stores, or autobody specialty stores.
