Kavik's Blue Wagon
« on: February 23, 2011, 01:48:06 PM »
I'm bored, thought I'd compile a list into one spot here with the details on my blue wagon.  A lot of this info is already in other places on the site, but I wanted to get one spot to put everything together....probably more for my benefit than yours  :crazy2:

Make: Subaru

Current hp/tq: Around 430/400 (going by what I was told, don't have the actual dyno sheet to verify)

(unsure of what's there for a front bar, keep forgetting to check lol)

STI Carbon Fiber Front strut tower bar
Whiteline quick release rear strut tower bar

(Previous owner said it had Crucial racing springs, don't know if the megan springs were replaced with crucial springs, or if he was confusing that with what he had before the coilovers)

My goals:

Power:
The engine came to me rather noisy and going through oil like crazy.  I need to have the whole thing torn down, inspected and hopefully rebuilt and not replaced  :buck2:
Once it's back in working order I need to have it professionally tuned.  Right now it's on a weak tune by an unknown tuner, but tuned for 20psi on 91 octane california gas, without the meth injection hooked up.  There were also doubts when talking to the previous owner about whether the AVCS was tuned properly (which could explain some of the roughness)
Ideally I'd like to take it down to Element Tuning and have them do it all, but we'll see what time and money allows for.
With the whole engine coming out, I'm also looking into the ported heads they offer.  Right now it's running on stock Sti heads, a little better flow could be nice.

Also, once everything's back together, I want to clean up the engine bay a bit, straighten out the hoses and wiring mess.  The intercooler was custom cut and welded to flow counter clockwise and keep the cold side away from the turbo, and the welds are holding fine, but they look like shit, so I want to sand them down then paint/coat the piping

Appearance:
Need to adjust the height, it's just too low
Want to get lighter tint to replace the 5-20% that's on it now
JDM fogs
Ditch the hood scoop for either a reverse mount or a smooth hood

Weight Loss Thoughts:
Note: all carbon fiber pieces would be painted to match
Carbon Fiber RS Style hood (If I decide a smooth hood over a reverse scoop)
Carbon Fiber rear hatch
Swapping the leather interior with Kim for her bugeye interior for now, may end up with different front seats in the future
Carbon Fiber Drive shaft
Full Titanium exhaust

Other ideas are welcome on weight reduction.  But I'm not removing the A/C and carbon fiber doors are out of the question (not only do they not make rears for the wagon, but I'm not risking carbon doors, a side impact, and my son in the back seat)

Pics:

For Dave, you win....

I'll change my signature if I can find a small enough Voltron Icon to replace the Beast

More coming soon, have to find what pics I have available here  I lost a bunch of pics that were stored online, will have to wait till I can dig some up at home

These are all pics I got from the previous owner, at different stages of his build, a lot of things are different, so read the comments on what I'm showing in the pictures...hope these tide you over for now

Intercooler, Prodrive Grill Inserts and hellas (Sti fogs and HID retrofitted headlights were off the car before I bought it)

Leather wrapped seats with blue stitching

Leather interior, carbon fiber trim/stereo surroung, carbon fiber e-brake handle, redline shift boot and armrest cover (defi gauges and touch screen stereo were also removed before the sale  :tickedoff:)

Here's a couple from the day before the car was shipped, still in sunny california

And the best shot I have of the rotated 35r, while trying to figure out where that blue hose popped off from lol
doesn't show much, but a rough idea of how big it is

And a more current pic of the engine bay.  When it all gets put back together I want to see about cleaning up the mess of wires and hoses, make it all a little cleaner looking

(oh, forgot the mention the APR CF alternator cover and radiator shroud.....pure bling  :2funny: :crazy2:)

last dyno run by the previous owner:

428/398, file name indicates 20psi and 91 octane

CELs ?  And if so, your plan on how to eliminate them and make the car "inspectable" and legal ?     That's a baaad motha'.

ummmm, technically no CEL's...nothing is hooked up to the OBD-II Port  :-D

there's a thread on the whole inspection issue here

Long story short, it's un-inspectable as the state computer just gets an error message that it's not connected.  I have a work around for it for the time being, but not going to get into that here  :coolsmiley:

Light weight Braille battery, move that sucker to the trunk.
Light weight seats for sure, but very pricey!

How much do you like Air Conditioning...?
enough that I listed it as one of the two things that were out of the question for removing  :crazy2:

I agree on the light weight battery, but I'm leery about putting it inside the cabin

Light weight seats for sure, but very pricey!
They are, but is it any worse than the price of a CF drive shaft?   :-D
(edit: or titanium exhausts for that matter.  Some of these things may not happen for a while, or ever, just fun thoughts for down the road  :-))

OK.  I have questions about that.. Crude electrical trickery may be the only cure.  Very crude.

I also vote on seats even if it saves you no weight because you'll be better planted.

yeah, I've just been holding off on thinking about seats for a couple reasons
1) I want something that's going to be adjustable for me, and comfortable enough to drive around in on a daily basis, for both myself and front seat passengers, without costing more than my first car.
2) It would be great to do nice seats and a harness setup, even a cage wouldn't be a terrible idea just in case, but I have to worry about back seat passengers and bars back there for either a cage or mounting points for the harnesses.  It has to stay within the 'family car' limits

Not saying that is or isn't a possible combination to create, I have no idea, but it's something that would take a lot more looking into before  giving consideration

Yeah, and besides, I have 2nd dibs, and we all know how much that means.
Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

spent some quality time with the car today......

all intercooler piping was pulled out, as well as the cold air intake.
But the good news is I found a LOT less oil in the piping than I was expecting, I think my initial concerns on that were exaggerated by the fact that the pipe that came off before was the lowest point in the whole system, and probably where 99% of the oil pooled since this was all put together the first time.

I think I'll still end up replacing this intercooler at some point with a Perrin stealth one...but probably not until later this year because of the engine rebuild costs. (unless anyone wants to make an offer I can't refuse while it's off the car?  :coolsmiley:)

The turbo looks good from what I can see so far.  Spins freely and just the tiniest little bit of shaft play, but according to the Garret site that's to be expected on a ballbearing turbo when there isn't oil running through it, so I think that's okay.  Waiting to hear back from Jeff at Perrin on monday with some diagrams on this turbo, he suggested checking to make sure both restrictors are in place and everything is hooked up correctly before worrying that the seals might be blown.  Considering the rest of the messes with this car I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if something like that was over looked by the previous owner  :tickedoff:

Also found one more hole on the intake that needed to be plugged that I missed before...it was on the bottom of the pipe, at a funny angle. :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

Well, I was home sick most of last week, so I spent a lot of time scouring different forums hunting down info on this car from the previous owner.
Adding his last dyno plot to my earlier post of pics.  And found a nice video of a 1st through 4th hard pull while the motor was still in it's break in period  :tickedoff:

Well, took a few hours with the car today.  Took out the front leather seats and put them in Kims car (surprisingly, there was only a couple pounds difference between the bugeye seats and these leather seats....not nearly as much as I thought there would be).  Will get to the rears later.

Then I swapped my wheels so we can get Kim's tires mounted up on the v7's.  absolutely love the way they look  :smitten:

WedsSport SA-70's 18x8, Bronze with Blue, Project Kics extended lugs

Need to take them back off at some point to mount my new tires on them, get hubcentric rings and get center caps  (just really not looking forward to spending $140 on freakin' center caps  :x)
