I'm accidently going Stage 2
« on: March 28, 2011, 06:34:36 PM »
So I had planned to do my timing belt in the next couple of weeks because I am at 111k, I bought the car with 52k and I know the belt has not been changed. Well I started inquiring about the job and what else can be done while we are in there. It turns out the up pipe can be done along with the down pipe. Couple this with getting my taxes back, a bonus at work (money burning a hole in my pocket and its not even there yet) and Dom coming to town, it all fell into place and made sense.

So in the next week I will be ordering the up and down pipes, timing belt kit and putting in the call for an Sti catback. When we find time everything will start to be slapped on the Saabaru and I will no longer be stock. Here is to hoping everything goes smoothly. I can see a beer and cigar filled afternoon and evening in my near future

So from the reading I have been doing there will be no real advantage for me to buy a new up pipe if I can get my hands on an Sti up pipe that is in good shape. Correct? I had been looking at a Grimmspeed UP for around $150-$175.

As for the dp. The 05 92x has a 2 piece dp. A lot of the folks on 92x.com have just replaced the first section of the dp and reused the 2nd section (which I believe keeps one cat in line). What losses will I incure with this set up? Will this decrease the pucker factor when going for an inspection?

This is one of my options

I've got nothing to back it up, but I hear having 1 cat is only a difference of like 5hp over no cats, assuming the cat is still flowing fine.  Would definitely be better on inspection days

Aftermarket up-pipes=easier to install (not as thick without all the heat shielding)
But then you have to pay out the ass for name brands and ceramic coating if you want to keep the heat resistance.
I wouldn't think twice about a stock Sti or a gutted wrx UP

if the timing is right on this i am taking off my up-pipe to put on an ewg up-pipe (hopefully if everything plans out well). then you can have mine for whatever the going rate for an 07 wrx up-pipe is (it is cat-less from the factory). it all depends on when the tune is.

I'd just grab either an STi up-pipe, or one from an '06-'07 wrx.   WRX has a EGT bung, STi units do not.   Not that you'll need it...

Benefits of OEM:  Catless, heatshield, oem materials retain heat better, looks stock for inspection, flex section aids in leak-free installation.

Benefits of Aftermarket:  Catless, pretty...  Some will say that shape / size is optimized for better flow....I have sincere doubts that any actual R&D went into a slightly bent 14" long piece of pipe.

 That's just my opinion.

J-  If you decide to go with just the first section of the downpipe, I have a Bosal divorced downpipe.   I change my mind every few hours about whether or not I'll do any mods to my WRX.     I don't know about all years, but '02-'07 are interchangeable where uppipes are concerned.

I will definitely take you up on the offer for the dp before you change your mind again. That way I have it and if I decide I want to change out the second section I can do that at a later date.

Im still on the fence with regards to the up pipe. You guys are correct I am not shwing the car so I dont need it to be shiney and new. It just needs to be better than my stock and not on the verge of failing.

Devon I would be willing to take your up pipe but timing is going to be critical. You and I are already on the clock. I dont want things to fall through and seomthing happen where it doesnt work out for the both of us.

Check back in an hour.

I also have the second / lower portion of the Bosal pipe.  It's actually on my car right now, as I used it to eliminate a leaky/cracked rear cat pipe that was causing me a P0420 CEL.

i might not do the ewg, i have to put brakes on the car, an o2 sensor, and finish my gauges. i also found out an ewg bumps me up a level in autox. i guess ill have to do some real hard thinking and money management (i want to see what im getting on my taxes).

Taxes are the only reason I am doing all this too. that and a bonus at work. I finally have the cash to put all this together and don't need to put anything on a card.

Next question, it has to do with scheduling the install before I get tuned. After I install how long can I drive around without a tune?

Have Dom send a base map to tide you over until the tune; my buddy is mailing my tactrix back, so I can flash it for you.

even if your car was all show-y, an up pipe isn't a very visible part LOL
$25 will get you one with new gaskets in j13welder's for sale thread, if you don't want to risk bad timing
(that's insanely cheap too, gaskets are probably almost $15....I paid $60 for one recently and it seemed like an average price  :|)
