why don't they make this size wheel very much?
« on: April 06, 2011, 02:37:17 PM »
On everything I look at be it for sale threads or wheel companies I'm hard pressed to find a 17x9 wheel... WHY they always seem to skip the 8.5/9 area and go straight to 10 OR they do plenty of 18" sizes, I see TONS of 18x8.5 but I want 17
Does it have something to do with weight? like at that point there is soo much tire it would add more weight than just increasing the rim size?

True, I feel like rota is... playd out for a lack of better term but I suppose a wheel is a wheel as long as it looks nice and doesn't deform. I wanted 9 for fitment reasons, because I've heard going 10's would require fender rolling and/or lots of camber, any problems with 9.5 or am I just reading crap from people. I have a set of ISC coilovers to put on this summer,  I don't want to slam the hell out of my car, and I don't want to stretch, camber, or roll the fenders.... this is one of those things that I have spent hours reading about and come out with nothing except for go spend 2g's and see if this works

Thanks for any input

....I should also mention that I'm not really looking for wheels right not, I wish I had the funds for it, but everyone's got priorities. I was just noticing the lack of that size (especially from the big expensive brands) and wondering if it was just me

I run a set of 17x9 Rota DTP's with a set of 245's, and love them. Played out or not, Rota's are pretty good bang for your buck. I did have to get my rear fenders rolled though, not a huge deal, Dan came over and we did them in my drive way in an hour or so. That is on a 3rd gen WRX, not to sure about the other years.

I agree with you 100%. I'm not nocking Rotas. The unfortunate thing about wheels is that there are only so many esigns that don't look gaudy and everyone has pretty much figured out which ones look the best and they run em

How much tire do you want to run?  I went the opposite of the crowd on my is300 when I did 16x8's with 245's in back and 225's up front.  Gave it an air of old-school muscle look.  Not to mention they were lighter and the 16's with a taller sidewall felt a lot better matched to the stock suspension.  I'm a fan of sidewalls that stick out past the rim because I parallel park all the time...and don't want to curb.

That's why I never bought a 'regular' wrx.  Everything's been done.  Now, the Baja?     Ugly was the new 'pretty'.   :2funny:

that's pretty sweet I agree with that fullyit might just be easier to throw the widest tire that'll safely fit on the 17X8 stockers... which iss......? any body... anybody? bueller?

edit: just looked a few threads down and turbaru metioned 245-40 is possible... new question: what's better for handling? 235 because of a "better fit" or 245 because of "larger contact patch"?

Styles and Sideshow should weigh in on this, they are really good with vehicle dynamics.

I've played with a lot of wheels and tires, but never switched widths without switching tire types between allseason, summer, r-compound, and snows.  I will say that it's down to personal preference.  A wider tire may sacrifice turn-in response for more overall cornering grip, but a narrower tire may feel sharper.

I would say to do 245's unless the 235's are way cheaper.  Better grip and more badass looking.
