Am i too hard on my wee little 1.8l?
« on: May 05, 2011, 04:21:48 AM »
Well, it seems lately, (thanks to pitcrew, letting me drive a rs and having power) i've been beating on my car pretty bad, been taking corners at higher speed, accelerating real fast, (6k redline shifts) but never hit the rev limiter. I've heard the 1.8's are tough, but i don't wanna send a rod through my case... So am i being stupid and going to ruin my car? Or am i fine and it'll take it?

When my parents had their Legacy I beat that thing as hard as I could from 90k to about 150k. I mean viciously. The only thing that ever broke were axle parts/CV Joints. We sold it because it was old and we needed something that could tow but it still ran like a champ.

this 1.8 brighton I bought off Pete is noisy as hell when it's cold. It's gotta be the worst case of piston slap I've ever heard.  It sounds like rod knock...but it goes away after it's warmed up.  I've delivered in it 4 times now and put over close to 600 miles on it and it's still knockin' away.  I'm just gonna drive it 'til it dies or something better comes along.

I have killed 2 2.2L motors.  8-)
2005 Subaru Impreza 2.5rs wagon

1995 Subaru Brighton Rs (sold)
2002 Hyundai Accent (sold)
1999 Chevy Cavalier (sold to my brother)
1998 Subaru Legacy wagon (traded to Blackparis)
1997 Subaru Legacy (Parted out and crushed)
1999 Honda Civic (Wrecked)
Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

rev it to the sky, beat it, blow it up then buy the 1.8 that I'm taking out of my Brighton.

Honestly though you prolly arent going to really hurt it. A lot of people cringe if they have their engine revved way high or whatever but it doesn't really hurt it as long as the oil and cooling systems are working well. Hitting the actual limiter isn't good on closer tolerance engines because it temporarily leans way out which can cause a little bit of knock but otherwise you are probably ok.

Fuck, my 2.0l is getting ready to explode..I started it up last night after sitting for a week and it sounded like a wrench was inside it.. :-X

I don't redline..  but im wot all the way to 5k everywhere  think eventually I'm just gonna drop a built 2.0 in it instead of getting another car..

then do it all over again..  :uglystupid2: :-D  Don't know why but I can't have a Subaru past 70k without significant problems..    :knuppel2:

Now that I picked up my Brighton I understand your pain. There isn't really any power to be found anywhere in the rev range with that motor, plus without a tach the fuel cutoff has snuck up on me a few times hahah.

if its got 213, especially on those....beat the balls off of that thing. you'll have a lot more fun with that than being nervous that your driving to hard.

My 1.8 is actually kinda fun since I dont care about it. Prolly hit the rev limiter 20-30 times since I got the car 4 days ago. Even easier to do without a tach.

Mines still running so I'd say you are pretty safe.

That 1.8 holds some abuse. I was gonna roll the car into the garage to start tearing it down today but first we tried to kill it again, drove it about a mile in 1st gear at 30mph, basically bouncing off the rev limiter the whole time. Took it back and bounced it some more and it still ran fine so I poured a bucket of water down the intake while it was running, now it doesn't run any more.

I even pulled the plugs and it wont turn over past a certain point. Probably bent a rod  :-D. All in all though, solid engine while I had it.

I'll prolly break the engine apart before I bring it to the scrap yard and see what actually happened to it.

Why the hell would you ever put a 1.8 in a car when a 2.2 is an almost direct swap and still a dirt cheap engine?
