Sandrail Project thread
« on: June 11, 2011, 12:13:33 PM »
I changed the name of the thread so I can document my rebuild of this buggy over the next year.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/street-legal-dune-buggy-sand-rail-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem33686692d0QQitemZ220794884816QQptZDuneQ5fBuggiesQ5fSandQ5fRails

I have wanted one of these things since I was a teenager. Finally next year I should be in a financial posistion to pick one up. I just hope there is something this hot for sale when I am ready to buy.

It's crazy how small they really are.  They only need one seat, really.  Personally i'd take a full size sandrail with a smallblock onboard.  This one, for instance:

Unfortunately those things go for 50k and up. THe little one I can get for under 10k. The Caterham is also out of my price range.

Yes Dave it will def be Dreaded2.

Don't know much about buggies, but couldn't you just take the fiberglass body off?
Eric

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

Yes you can take the fiberglass body off. The orange one was a thin sheet metal body. I think I want one with no body at all just a straight tubular frame.

Talking to a guy at work today about sand rails. He knows a guy just south of Albany that might be looking to get rid of one for about $1800. For that money  I would pick it up this year and build it up the way that I want it.

I am calling about this one tonight.  :-DI found it on Craigslist in Michigan for $1400. If it is still available I should be making a road trip on the 13th to pick it up. With less than $1000 put into it I can have it road street legal in NY. Another grand into it next year and I can have it looking the way I want it.
