let's hope this one holds
« on: June 17, 2011, 06:10:16 AM »
this is AudiTT, dunno why it wouldnt let me sign in that name.

anyway awhile back i went stg2 and the clutch let out. changed that then 250miles later second gear shit the bed. Well now ive picked up a new 4.11 trans from a jdm 95 wrx and i'm of course swapping in the rear diff aswell. this is supposed to be a low mile transmission so we'll see how long it lasts.

Are you stating that you're a bad driver?

Sounds like you should have gotten an automatic...

Sounds like you enjoy being rude. Every think its possible my trans has had the shit beat out of it for 148k? However thanks for your assumptions,  feel free to exit stage left.

In other news, trans swap went great and the car shifts/drives like new!

Btw this is my first EVER clutch/transmission problem and not my first awd turbo vehicle.

Just saying.. Kinda find it hard to believe you wasted the time replacing the clutch when 2nd gear only lasted 250 miles. I'd think you'd notice there wasn't something right before then, unless you just beat the crap out of it and dont care.

Actually, it is a pretty logical progression when you think about it...

1. Weak, slippy clutch allows gradual/soft engagement.
2. Replace with new grabby clutch increasing the stress on the gears, stress they haven't seen for many miles.
3. Expose a preexisting weakness in the gears due to increased stress.  The stress doesn't necessarily need to be abusive.

A similar scenario exists when people put heavier clutches in these transmissions...

Is it truely the gear that stressed and cracked? Or is the shifter-fork/syncro just screwed up.

Really are these transmissions that bad that just replacing the clutch on stage 2 ej20 can shatter gears?

I did the same thing once. Had my clutch replaced and then I broke a Shift-Fork. ~200 miles later. Thats driver error. Not used to the grabby clutch. Trying to shift TOOO fast.. I'll admit I did it.

Obviously the car made it 148k miles just fine. So therefor I doubt the previous Owners, constantly raped the clutch and trans.

IDK.. I just started this because I couldn't find a reason for this post.. What does the OP want? Us to pray to Jesus and the Deity King Subaru, that this "Used" probably Junkyard 16 yearold transmission is going to last him?

There is a statement about his junk. No question. Nothing Technical about the trans swap. I was just looking for reasons why it would fail to help the OP prevent the issue from happening again. Most likely answer is driver error. Given the information provided.

chunks of the gear were found when it was drained, btw you only posted to be arrogant. The fact that a mod would be rude i find doesnt say much for this forum.

I posted this to see what maybe people thought of this trans and possibly the chances of it lasting. Since you obviously have nothing of any use to add please feel free to follow my first response to hit the "back" button and exit the same way you entered.

to anyone thinking of making the switch to a 4.11 trans, DO IT! this is how the car should have came. Feels much peppyer( :idiot2:) and for day to day city driving its great.

Regardless of the way he went about it, he does kind of have a point though....what are we supposed to base our guess on about the longevity of an unknown tranny out of a 16 year old car from another country and an unknown previous owner?  Could've been a 35 y/o guy with 20 years driving experience...could've been a 16 year old kid learning to drive his first stick and drifting down mountains on the weekend.

Did you have it opened up? inspected? Any other info to go on?  Short of that...grab a tarot deck or flip a coin, it's anyone's guess.  The fact that it feels good now and works well is a good enough start to be happy about I'd think    (you could've gone through the install and found out you bought a tranny with stripped gears or a million other issues)

No disrespect intended at all, but before you dole out judgement against the entire forum based on one smart-ass remark (from a mod or otherwise), I can't help but point out: you're not new here.
In 15 months of being a member you didn't notice any trend of certain people here making valid points with sarcasm and humor mixed in?  Personally I think it's what makes this site work over some others I've been on where everyone's so tight-assed and serious to the point that there's nothing there to enjoy.  If/when I break a tranny I fully expect to get my driving skills critiqued, regardless of the cause   (fwiw, I'll probably blame it on a 70-20 downshift to second without a computer rev-matching for me  :-D)

Anyway, glad you're happy with the new-to-you tranny and hope it lasts you the life of the car  :-)

P.S.
I do agree that Phong's explanation quite possibly hit the nail on the head to explain the order of events

Jesus said to me "Yes my SON, his transmission will last" and this morning, when I toasted my bread, there appeared a burnt image of the transmission! So there is a sign. It will last you forever!

I thought the bugeye 5mt's came with 4.11's?  You should throw some subaru extra-s gear oil in the transmission, the stuff is magic and may help give you the longevity you desire.

Nope 3.90's.  I want 4.11's or even 4.44's in my next car, perfect for dirt road and the short sprints required for passing in VT.

I am all for humor and jokes, I am probably the least serious person you'll ever meet. His comment simply struck a nerv is all.

My question I guess really isn't about how long it will last(all depends on if I beat on it) but what people think of the swap over all. Wether you think the 4.11 trans being stronger then the 390. Some have said that being the gears are shorter it should take less stress in the gear itself.

I've wondered casually if the jdm 5 speeds are stronger from a couple of comments I've read too....never found any definitive answer, but haven't dug too deeply either.

Honestly, I do prefer the 5 speed over the 6 speed, especially for city driving, but I need something that can handle a lot more power than a wrx tranny could deal with.  At the same time though I don't want a noisy, whiny, 'built' tranny.......so, i'll be curious to see the long term on this one

The thought is that they are stronger if for no other reason shorter gearing results in less shock on the gears (don't ask me to explain the physics).  This why you don't see many complaints about FXT transmissions being weak even with the EJ255/7 under the hood.

I've suspected the same thing.  I wondered why wagonzilla's transmission has done so well with so many others of that vintage failing.  It has 4.11's, easy to tell because it's turning the same revs on the highway as the baja with the same gears and tire size.  Yes, I had undersized tires on it for a while.  Also, I highly suspect the VF39/FMIC induce enough lag as to not 'shock' the transmission like a high-boost, no-lag Ej255/td04.

Nope 3.90's.  I want 4.11's or even 4.44's in my next car, perfect for dirt road and the short sprints required for passing in VT.

I can't even imagine the Type RA 4.44's.  Do the gears have a different spread?

I absolutely love the trans so far though. The nice notchy feeling from the single cone syncros is a plus too.
