STI Wagon? I'm thinkin yes....
« on: July 20, 2011, 11:12:05 PM »
Ok so I'm fairly confident that my transmission may be on the way out. I'm also fairly confident that when it does go that nothing else will do for me except a 6 spd (unless i decide to put a stock 07 wrx transmission back in). This being said, what do I need to do the swap with out Brembos and STI hubs and with Brembos and STI hubs? (obviously the hubs, brembos, and new wheels) There is a list on nasioc, but it's a little bit confusing and i'm not sure if all of that is compatible with a wagon application.

Any help is appreciated and don't worry this probably isn't needed asap....probably.

List O Parts to get:
02-05 wagon axles -   front 04 axles 150 shipped out
04 sti stubs -             $100 shipped out
DCCD controller -       06 DCCD w/box maybe 75 shipped (maybe a sniiper one from nasioc...gotta so do some research)
rear ring and pinion -  i can get an 02-05 rear diff and apparently that mates with the 06-07 sti tranny
auto drive shaft -      madlife?
07 sti tranny ($4100)

V7 Full swap w/ brembos 3550 + 450 (brembos) shipped, gonna call today (2/1/12)

because then it wouldn't be an sti wagon, and i'd still have a car with a borked tranny.

If it was me I'd get a dogbone tranny over a Sti, they are unbreakable

because i don't want to double clutch every shift and have that nice dogbox whine all the time. i still want the car to be fairly comfortable to drive.

The dogbone idea only works in a 6 spd box anyways... any truly high HP/TQ application can twist/flex the 5 spd casing making the strength of the gears a secondary consideration.

I am 99% sure everything that is applicable in a Sedan will be in a Wagon. You will also need the control arms from any Sedan to get the right front width of the car if you use the axles that fit into a sedan. Regular steel ones would work but the STi Alum ones would be nice.

It would be if you bought a complete swap for your wagon, which is probably what 6k would get you.

Quote me now while I'm feeling good about it.  I've decided a WRX will be the vehicle that replaces the Jeep.  I can't see paying Evo prices or justifying purchasing a halfassed/beat to death example for the same asinine amount of money.  For an affordable, point to point, all-weather capable performance car, a wagon fits the bill.  A swapped wagon, even better.

I can get you a brand new 07 STI (longer gears) trans for $4100

you can use your clutch and flywheel, you would need a auto driveshaft and a different rear ring and pinion in your diff, a dccd control, you can get the trans stubs from a 04 sti and install them so you can use 02-05 wrx axles and no need to change hubs to 114.3 or get all new control arms.

that all just sounds amazing. so i guess ill grab up the other misc. items and then when the time comes, i'll order the new trans from ya.

edit: i'm assuming i'll need sedan axles, if so, will i need to get sedan control arms and then sedan sway bars and endlinks?

If you get sedan axles my understanding was you must have Sedan arms (oh yeah and sway bar/links).

you can get the trans stubs from a 04 sti and install them so you can use 02-05 wrx wagon axles (female axles shafts) and no need to change hubs to 114.3 or get all new control arms.

What he said.

BUT if you are going this far I would want to do the sedan control arms/axles and related bits. It's super nice how much of static negative camber it gets you.

but what's not nice is trying to fit wheels in the already finicky wagon fenders if you push the hubs out even further

I never had any issues with 245's in the front. It only really pulls the bottom out significantly.

245's with Sedan CA's-

Dogbox, not Dogbone.  Just say'n.

Unless you're an aspiring racecar driver, Dogbox tranny is silly.  No syncros is retarded.  Daily driving a Dogbox is even more retarded.  Every shift you perform with a Dogbox, consists of double clutching and intentional slam shifting.

You can build a strong tranny, without resorting to eliminatiing syncros from the whole assembly.  If for any reason you have parts failure in a Dogbox tranny, you will be paying out of your ass for new replacements.

Don't confuse "Dogbox" with spur (straight) cut.  Totally different things.  One is how gear engagment is initialized, the other is the orientation and axis in which gear teeth are machined.   I had straight cut gears (heavy whine) but with double syncros and needle roller conversion.  Smooth.

STi trans, I say do it !  Replacements parts are readily available, it's 6 speed, and it's strong.

As your friend I might have to convince you to stop with the car and get the ring.  Remember, I got dumped for many reasons, one of which was 'the car is more important'.  Duh, you're a girl, there are 3.5 billion of you, but only 1 wagonzilla!
